Abby Normal

It's a huge problem for flat coat retrievers in the UK. I have only personally known one GSD with it, and he  made it to 4. But at the end it was a very rapid decline and a horrible death for a beautiful boy.

I have personally known one but have seen many others on forums. The one I knew it was 3 days from the time he went to the vet to the time he died. It was fast and horrible. He was 9 months old.

Well said, Videx. I agree.

I emailed DDC and this test is patented so Dogenes must be used when testing.Does anyone know if any certain bloodlines of gsd are having issue with this disorder or if it is across the board in this breed? I am just curious as I have not seen it as of yet. Again great post

Go to Dogenes.com/JRD article, very good explanation. According to the article, the GSD is the breed that JRD is not prevalent. That's what I recall from reading it, anyway.

Dogenes does say that GSD is not "prevalent". However, how many illnesses were culled or hidden? Several times, pups will die at birth that have this issue.

As far as what lines, it has been seen pretty much across the board, more so West German show and working.

They were of the breeds tested.

Yes, but only a grand total of 85 were tested. That is not a clear respresentation of the breed as a whole.

I just want to share these links so others can make their own opinions on JRD in our breed:

This is the family of GSD's used in the DOGenes research.

Question: Without doing an X-ray, how would anyone know whtat the incidence of Hip Dysplasia is in the GSD?

Question: Without doing the JRD DNA Test, how would anyone know what the incidence of JRD is in the GSD?

Penitrence of JRD of less than 50% will allow GSD to live a relatively normal life for 10 to 15 years. Remember a dog can live with 1 kidney, or this may be worded a 50% or less of their both kidneys NOT functioning becase of JRD, and therefore there could be large numbers of GSD with JRD without showing any symptoms whatsoever.
