I should have stated if she is having contractions. I was always told if their having contractions and nothing is coming out then the time frame is 2-2 in a half hours to wait and if there is no pup then take her to the vet. At least that is what happened with my female. Our vet told us to rush her in after waiting for 2 in a half hours, and he said there is one fant heart beat and did a emergency c-section. If I was told wrong I appologize, I'm just going by what I was told and what happened with our female. Good luck with her!!

98? Get the catcher's mitt, towels and suction bulb & heat up the room! She should whelp within 24 hrs., if that. I try to have a cc or two of oxtocin (from my vet) around, given 4 hrs. or so after the last pup expected is born to clean out residual crud and assist with milk production. I don't always use it with young females, but always with females over 6 yrs. old. Good luck. Its gonna be a long night. SS

I agree with Shelley, that Oxytocin is a useful thing! I only give it after the whole whelp, but thats just me. I recommend after the whelp because if there are any retained placentas, afterbirths, whatever, she could get an infection, and would need that shot WITHIN 24hours of the final pup. Just my opinion

To every one a big thank you for responding to my questions. My friends female had 9 puppies. One of them (the runt)is half the size of the others. Is it advisable to supplement feed him or just let him go?

by gsdlvr2 on 13 February 2007 - 15:02

I would try to put him on the back nipples because they don't have to work so hard to get the milk. Keep a close eye on weight gain, if he doesn't gain, supplement
