Shepherd Woman

by Shepherd Woman on 14 November 2007 - 13:11

My white shepherd, Bree is 5 years old and she STILL eats all the poop she can get her mouth on.  She also eats the cats poop!  We have tried everything we can think of, but she eats it as fast as she can while we are yelling at her!  We also call her poopy breath!

I didn't know this before, but when my dog was a pup she started this.  I talked to her breeder who said that I may have been stressing her out with too much training, new environments, etc.  I backed off on the stress and the problem went away.  Just a thought.

I think Domenic and Oskar have the two main reasons a dog will eat poop.  Oskar brings up the problem of learned behavior.  The pups see mom doing it and try for a while.  This type of poop eating is a phase.  It goes away with time.  What Domenic said is what all of you with older dogs are experiencing.  Dogs sense of smell is much greater than you and I.  When we get a smell of a pile, we only smell poop.  A dog, on the other hand, can smell all the nutrients that were not digested.  It is one thing for them to smell thier own undigested food in thier poop, but another to smell undigested food from someone else's food source like a cat, deer, rabbit or even another dog food.  They smell a rare treat.

OK, in some countries, dogs consider their own excrement a fine delicacy!

Embrace it and your dog will shower you with love and kudos!

I make a very sassy glazing for the crap that the dogs just love!

  • Use 2 bunches of fresh German celery
  • Boil for 30 minutes. (celery will become mushy)
  • Drain water and let stand for 5 minutes
  • In a mixing bowl, add celery and the following:
  • 2 cubes of beef boullion (they think they are eating a real cow)
  • 1 tsp mustard (helps with confidence)
  • 1/8th cup crisco (sexual stamina)
  • 3 nuggets of cat poop

With a fork, mash all the ingredients together until blended. It should have a "relish" consistency.

Walk around the yard and pour a heap on each shit-bomb you see.

Your dog will thank you over & over!

Bob-O hit it on the head    for all the vet bills and all the research you can dig up and all the 1000 answers you get.....it is evident....they learned this behaviour from their mom     Think about it....a dog is a hunter and scavenger by design and they keep the whelping area clean by eating the feces of the young...From the day the pups open ears and eyes they see their mom cleaning it up and moms are still cleaning and removing it till they go home to a new  place....

You can put   steak tenderizer on the food you feed...or order   FORBID  or  try the pineapple on food for a week....may work nay not, nextt  chalenge is to not let poop sit more than 2-3 seconds ,,,when poop it out....gotta be fast.....faster then they are.....make a noise or get their attention away from it and pic it up and dispose......keeps germs and flies away anyway...

I have seen  my big Bear  eat his poop and he is 6 years old....it has been when he was hungry and I was feeding and he didnt have his yet, but he needed to dump and turned around  and     whallah ....I scream and he looks up and I grab it up or wash it away...which ever comes first and fastest........do not fret over this,,,,it is not a good habit   as cocci and giardia can result over a time...but just try to get it stopped......add yogurt to your food for 4 -5 days a week and that will help make a less stinky poop.....helps disenagrate the proteins properly.

This is one of the many trying feats in raising a german shepherd.........they try you in every way......
