We have many illusions about our freedom and about our safety.  A deeper problem lies in that while guns may offer an illusion of safety, there are many that are unwilling or unable to use a firearm under stress.

Firearms in and of themselves are no substitute for preparedness.  Like many dogs that are sport trained for protection, firearms may serve as a deterrent, but only as long as the offender perceives a threat to his person.  But in reality, is that sufficent cause to feel safe?  Vigilance and courage are what will make the difference, preparing your mind to act.  If you own a firearm, you should be proficient with it, and mentally prepared to use it, through training excercises and scenarios while under stress and utilitzing various visualization techniques.

Many protection trained canines are proficient with their skills, but also not adequately mentally prepared off the field of training, in potential real-life threatening scenarios.  While they may perform quite nicely in a closed system for competition purposes under certain criteria, many lack the natural level of suspicion and sharpness to react in defensive aggression with courage in an environment where "anything goes".

Whichever you decide to rely on, and I'd recomend both, ultimately it's YOU that you have to count on.

In Alaska, you do not have to get a permit to carry a weopon!  Any person 21 years of age or older may carry a handgun concealed on their person provided that, when contacted by a police officer, informs the officer of that possession and allows the police officer to secure the handgun for the duration of that contact.

I have signs at my house "Forget the dog, beware of owner!"  With a picture of a gun pointing straight at you.  I have several rifles, though no pistol yet.  I want to get one, now my daughter is old enough to not mess with it.

There have been burglaries on either side of me, despite their alarm systems.  I have not had a problem the three and a half years I have been here.  Probably because of the dogs.  I usually leave a trained dog in the house when I go somewhere.

It is proven that Theives prefer the easier route traveled and less complicated burglaries because they are basically lazy living off others, therefore they avoid dogs (usually).  My SAR team leader has a HUGE male GSD & Golden retriever and someone came to their house over the weekend (when most people are home), broke into their locked fence to enter their back yard & steal from their shed in broad day light.  The majority of people who steel from you know you and what you have and/or your schedule (work, etc.).  Therefore they usually know what they want before they come to visit.  :o(  I don't live in fear, life is too short and I have dogs, clubs & a gun.  If you enter my home and/or property without permission and are able to walk out you are better than the average bear because I am going to do everything possible to make sure your career as a theif has ended.

Liberalandy,

I don't care about the FBI statistic's, or anyone else's number's.   We are what we are and the tool's we use are a convenience.  If one tool isn't handy we would use another.

You mention kid's, they must be educated about firearm's and protected from them if you own them.  I lock up hunting weapon's and keep the handgun of choice with me at all time's, it's never left in the house or in a car.  I alway's know where it is at all time's,   I have it.  My kid's are grown now and have their own gun's, I know I did my best to teach them safety, as well as right from wrong.

God how we love talking about our gun's, almost more than the kid's and dog's..LOL

BabyEagle must be right ,  gun's must be sexy...lol

Darylehret,

You are correct about illusion's,  so many people live in a fog.   Reality is hard to swallow sometime's but it's there anyway.

I love the old indian photo's, it's truely a shame they suffered our progress.

On another note,

Does anyone know where I could find a Winchester Featherweight classic in a .308 caliber??

Just curious....:)

YellowRose,

Try a big welcome sign with bullet hole's in it from the back side..LOL

Shot up target's in plain sight are alway's a plus, especially silouette style target's.

I alway's got a kick out of  (Second hand lion's)  where the brother's set on the porch waiting for travelling salesmen to shoot at...   and all the sign's they drove past coming in the driveway..   it's a good movie.

Anyway, I think your safe....:)

Brent.

two moons, I know what you mean, but kids are walking idiots. you can teach them all you want a friend comes over and he or she loses their minds. I really worry about kids and guns. When I was growing up my mom had a 38. she told me never to touch it. I didnt, but my next door neighbor did and shot me in the leg with it. It was and accident, but kids will be kids. Numbers dont lie, and numbers are against the kids when there is a gun in the house. Like i said I am not anti gun. Just a little smarter then most of my buddies who have shot their friends (hunting). I hear those stories all the time, but I have never met a man that shot a man in self defense.

I have met a man in Little Rock who shot a 15 year old breaking into his storage slum house.  He was quite proud of it, and nothing came of it the incident, since the kid did break in.  It was sick.  His house was full of useless shit, cheap clothing ten years out of date still in plastic all over the floors along with magazine and newspapers, nothing of much value....what a thing to die for.  There are a lot of irresponsible and crazy people out there, it is scary to think that they many have guns.  One of the nuttiest women I ever met always owned a handgun and often took it with her.  She did not have a criminal record, so she could legally own the damn thing.  I am for responsible people owning guns, but many who have guns are very irresponsible or downright batty.

Not pointing at anyone here, but when children are not educated with guns in the home it is like anything else in life..

There are parents who do a Half ass job of parenting, there are workers in jobs who do a half ass  job of working at their job, there are people in this world who do a half Ass job at living....those people harm those of us that teach and do the right thing and have guns.

If you do a half ass job of owning a gun , you will pay or may pay the price...Doesnt mean the rest of us should not have guns , or anyone who wishes to own one.We need to get back to a home and a country that people take the time to do things, all things right.  IT is real  SIMPLE>
