Doberdoodle

The tough thing about board and trains is that the owner has a history with the dog.  The trainers only history is obedience from the get-go, so the dogs bad behaviors can be more inhibited.  It's hard to work on something if the behavior is already inhibited.  Some of them do act perfect with a trainer, then they are aggressive again back in the hands of the owner.  And some act perfect with the owner while on the grounds of the training facility.  Overcoming that history and forming a new type of relationship is the tough part.

Due to my situation and needs my dogs are sent out to be trained. Sometimes, I put the foundation of what I am looking for on myself and then send, sometimes I get them already done. I have only had 1 idiot trainer, my fault in choice, not the dogs. I can tell you this in my opinion, 5 days is a JOKE, I would run not walk. I can also tell you if you do not plan on spending time with the dog and the trainer at the end, you will most likely have the same issues you are having now. They revert back to your house rules (what they understand them to be) with selective hearing. It really is quite funny, when they figure out you know the rules to and are going to enforce them. I would send the dog and then take a few days vacation and go and work with the dog and trainer before you just bring him home. I understand the pros of doing it yourself, I also understand the need of having it done, congradulate those who do it themselves, and I congradulate those who send them out, either way, here is another trained, well behaved Owner, works for me!

Deanna, why commit to boarding and training off the bat? Go to this facility, take a few private lessons. See how they interact with your dog, see how Prince reacts to their methods. And if you still feel he would benefit from staying there for a few weeks, leave him, but with peace of mind knowing you aren't just jumping in with a trainer you don't know.

Whoops totally lost that one. Sorry
We sent our dog out for training. One of the toughest things I have ever done.  We had done some of the basic stuff  but knew that she needed clarity of expectations and consistency in how is was taught and proofed that was beyond us and what we knew. We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome that we had. I would have to agree that the biggest piece was the training of us at the end and of course the accessibility of the trainer after bringing her home. There was an adjustment period after she came home where she tested some rules but we had been warned about that and were given the confidence and tools to handle it. We also used the option of going back and doing some one on one training with the facility. That I highly recommend. Guess what any issues we were having was...... yep the handler. Once we got squared away she was able to relax and get down to business. I would agree with others about checking the place out prior and really check out references. How many of their clients are repeat customers? Just saying it worked out very well for us.
