I don't have a problem with all percentages of death tax.  I just have a problem with a confiscatory one

Mickey, you are a darn socialist!

At the least you are less fiscally conservative than I am. It is one of the tax changes Bush made that I agree with.

Make no mistake, if death taxes are reinstated - especially at the levels that were in effect before Bush - all that will happen is that different tax avoidance techniques will be adopted to negate the effects. It is what happened prior to the temporary repeal of death taxes under Bush.

I have the right to do what I will with my estate - and if I feel that leaving it to my children/grandchildren would adversely affect their work ethic, I would just leave a portion of it to charity.

Hell, spend it all before you die. It will boost the economy and teach the kids to stand on their own 2 feet rather than waiting for mom and dad to croak. When my kids both reached 21 years of age I figured it was up to them to make their way in the world without depending on inheritances from mom and dad. Frankly, IMO adult kids should be asking their parents what they can do for them instead of what they can expect their parents to do for them.

Live large, spend it all!!!

If he loses, McCain's selection of Sarah Palin will be viewed as being his downfall. Listen to what a prominent Republican with impeccable credentials says about the choice of Palin:

KTF, you caught me!  Actually, I disagree with death taxes unless they are completely fair - and I mean completely.  Therefore, let the politicians of any stripe tax widows and reap the popularity that will generate.  Set ONE tax rate for all estates.  And, I totally agree with you, the Kennedy's and Rockefellers will still be safe behind the trusts they set up decades ago.

Oh, and I'm glad to see you've seen the light, and you're voting for McCain, thanks to good ol' RatPack

Hope the goblins didn't get all of your redistributed wealth last night,

Micky

 >Hell, spend it all before you die.<

And we ALL know exactly when we're going to the great beyond, and so we never spend all of our money and then end up in the care, of, wait for it, OUR CHILDREN?

Hell, spend it all before you die

Ahh! Therein lies the dilemma. We don't know how long we are going to live. If we have an average life expectancy we could live high on the hog and blow it all. But what happens if we live to the age of 90 or 95, what happens if we need to hire nursing help, what happens if all these dire forecasts one reads about on this board and elsewhere come to pass, etc.

We live very well at this time and would like to make sure that we maintain our current standard of living. It is always hard to live well and then have to take a cut in one's living standard thereafter.

I agree with the rest of what you say. We have supported our kids up to the point they completed their undergrad degree - a deal we made with them that we would pay for the very best college they could get into. When it comes to grad school they are on their own for the most part. We have one who just started med school and we'll help him out a bit - because med school is so expensive. Another funded her own MBA from an excellent school and the third will start business school next year.

We will not count on any of them helping us either financially or otherwise - if it happens that would be great.

Quit that, KTF, quit echoing my thoughts! You're going to absolutely ruin my reputation.

Actually, I am a bit different in that I believe we are stewards of our wealth, such as it is, and we intend to bequeath our estate to our family and to charity.
