Oli, thank you so much for this feature, you are the best.
Always,

And MaggieMae, that's exactly what I expected from someone who yammers on endlessly about "sock puppets" and accuses others of hiding behind multiple user names when they don't agree with you - while, of course, seeking to remain totally anonymous yourself.

Hypocrite status confirmed.  Thanks for playing.

I find DD's name is quite offensive. I certainly never type it. I think he made his point whatever it was, and should change it.

It's apparent some feel threatened by the very idea of a moderator or the idea of this board being about dogs only, but instead of merely stating their own opinions and the reasons for same,  they resort to childish name calling and personal attacks, as usual.

Actually they are the  very proof that this board needs moderation.

Don,

While I detest your screen-name (and it is offensive), I cannot argue with your reasoning.   I would second your comments.

Sue:

"All anyone needs to know about whether Oli wants people to post political/religious threads is that he has deleted them en masse on more than one occasion." (DD)

True enough!

I believe the two primary reason politics and religion should be avoided at all costs are as follows:

1. This is a dog forum. When Oli first divided into breed specific and general he actually did state the reason he added the general topics was so that dog topics related to all breeds would be visible to everyone, where as topics specific to a breed would only appear under that breed.

2. These types of discussions always devolve into personal attacks and people basically repeating themselves over and over again, but using slightly different words and phrases. It's the nature of the beast, it serves no purpose, other than the selfish needs of the one doing the venting. I am pretty sure not one single person has ever been swayed to change their core, secondary or even their peripheral political or religious beliefs because of what they read on this dog forum. In short it's not productive and in fact is destructive to the forum.

I think another good idea might be an "ignore" button. But what I would like to see is every time people post, if anyone has put them on their "ignore" list, the names of all the people
who ignore that person would show up on the bottom of every post the ignored person makes.

I would add that one of the beautiful things, particularly for those of us that actually train, is that  we are sharing a passion with others who have a similar passion.   NONE of us are completely normal to our non-dog friends, given the time, energy, financial and other resources we spend on our dogs.

I don't even have a clue about the political or religious persuasions of most of my club members, with whom I spend a considerable number of hours every week.  Similarly, I  have no clue about the vast majority of my sport friends across the country, many of whom I speak to telephonically several times a week, hang out with for days at a time at events, etc.    But, these political and/or religious threads bring in an ugly element, and one that leads to judgments of individuals that would not otherwise occur.  Whether that is "good" or "bad" is a separate issue.  There are people whose venomous (and/or racist) " political" and/or religious views have the tendency to make them persona non grata in other venues.   Personally, ignorance really was bliss in a few cases.  It should remain so.  Instead, as a result of some of the "political" and/or religious threads, there are people whose primary identification and substance  has been their political and/or religious statements, rather than any element of a  shared passion.

Good call, Nia; it's the same way in the skydiving community.  Couldn't care less about your politics, religion or even your job...you can either fly your slot in a formation without endangering everyone else or you can't.

Of course, for those who neither skydive or train their dogs...

Many other boards have specific areas to post specific subjects.  While I at times find this cumbersome, it does cut down on all of the above issues.  Sections related to training, feeding, equipment, pictures, breeding, etc., are clearly delineated.  There is also a "chat" section on most where off-topic threads may be discussed.  Also, each section has appointed moderators, making it easier to keep the subject on target.  While I like the format of this particular board, the others do seem to have more control as OT posts are moved to the appropriate section.  I know that would be much more work for Oli but in the long run, may solve many of the problems here.  This solution wouldn't necessarily be my personal choice but is just another suggestion.

A quote function would be nice.
This is the only board I go to that doesn't have one.
