Shelley Strohl

by Shelley Strohl on 23 February 2008 - 22:02

Increase Kalli's food 50%, divided over 2-3 daily feedings. Plenty of fresh water always available. She will need to go out more, of course. Some exercise... med. length walks very good, will help keep her condition up for whelping, but no strenuous running. You had kids. You know the drill. LOL Do NOT take your eyes off her outdoors. Amazing how fast a female will decide to become "nature woman", despite all our efforts to provide a civilized environment, disappear to dig a hole in the mud under the house/shed/neighbors' garage and drop her whelps before we can get the flashlight out of the junk drawer to look for her. Ha ha ha. conni was a master at this.

Also, she may not be in the best of moods in her last trimester.  Might want to chaperon time with Monster-puppy Beckett lest she bite his fool head off when/if he plays too hard.

I'd get everything ready ASAP, let her start sleeping in the whelping box, "No Boys Allowed!" Take temp 2x day. If she stops eating, and/or temp drops, and/or starts whining and digging, you're probably about to be a grandmother again, but some show NOTHING till she drops the first whelp! Lets hope she holds out till at least 58 days.

Its good to let them eat at least the first couple placentas. Stimulates milk production and clotting. More than that and they get mongo  diahrrea, but make sure to count placentas.

More later, closer to the fact (WE HOPE!) Hope you have a good book or two, or a few videos to watch all freaking night long for as many as 3-4 nights in a row to read while you wait box-side. I'm sure they do this on purpose. LOL Fall asleep and I'll guarentee she'll silently drop a pup or two just to show you she's smarter than we are.

:-D

We have already increased her food, and every time I take her out she tries to dive under anything she can fit under, and tries to squish under stuff she couldn't possibly fit into!!! Starting taking the temps already, but didn't like the thermometer we had, so got a new one today....and Beckett plays WAY too rough for her now, his idea of fun is a slide into base at 80 mph with all the force of a freight train...no way he's getting near her at this point. However, this creates another problem. We try rotating rooms, crates, etc., to keep them apart, but Beckett knows that something is up, something has changed, and Kali is getting more attention, and he really doesn't like it. Very, very jealous, even with extended play times and increased attention, he's not getting left out of this! And to prove his point, he has completely destroyed his Vari-kennel. I didn't know that a dog could do that kind of damage! Imagine if he had been in flight somewhere! (well, he might be, soon as Carl gets home & sees that!) So, another thing to do now is find a suitable containment system for Beckett. Maybe a #700 series Vari-kennel??? They are supposed to have a stronger door than the #500.....and we are building a 'lid' for the whelping box. I could just see Beckett jumping into the box with his big feet & squishing a puppy! jackie harris

Or getting himself killed by Kali

Please make sure you are only taking her out on a leash. Bitches can be quite devious to get away when it come near whelping time.

Yeah, Rezkat, & Beckett's such a numbskull he'd keep at her until she ripped his face off, even then he'd probably not quit. We're are going to extreme measures to keep them apart! They still go out for walks together, and they behave very well, but on their home turf, obviously a different story!

And Zwinger, my first dog was hit by a car & killed on my 16th birthday, she was off leash at the time, since then I've never felt comfortable with off leash walks unless we're somewhere I know is secure. And as I said above, she is actively looking for a nice 'den', the muddier the better!!! So...she has to stay on her leash ....until the babies are here! (And even then, I 'm a nervous Nellie about that...between my snoopy neighbors, and the nearby road that you'd think was full of Mario Andrettis, my dogs are safer with me) jackie harris

My intact female always goes through this nesting phase after her seasons.  The one summer, she made quite the den under the bench in the yard.  Fixed that though, patio block!  I can't imagine what she'd be like when/if she ever has a litter.

We need to talk some more. No ug-iies. Just a few tweaks to make this all smooher and more satisfying for all, man and beat,

Here is a picture of the Mama, scoping out the property for a 'den'. Sadly, for her, there is no area currently muddy enough to suit her. She'll just have to settle for the whelping box still under construction! (sigh) jh
