justcurious, you should read some of Peter Singer's stuff. He's at Princeton University and he has actually made the argument you just called absurd. It's a coherent argument and does logically flow from the argument for abortion, even if we both agree it's perverse. I really couldn't make up anything that perverse. It took an academic theoretician to do so.
I suppose your definition of life determines your thought on when life begins. Is a cell alive when it is dividing and functioning? According to many scientists, it is. Must it have consciousness? Is it that it feels pain? How are consciousness and pain determined? Are outside inputs required, that is, outside care and/or nutrition?
I have to go take care of dogs now, so I'll be gone for a while.

...calling a child in the womb a parasite, is NOT a level of discussion, it is a level of demoralization to human life.

Sam I am pro choice and against the death penalty, one is not mutually exclusive from the other.

Just passing through,
The only thing that caught my eye was,
Someone please prey for the children.
Why doesn't someone reach out to those children, with stretched out arms and open hearts, do your prayers feed them or hold them when they hurt?
Does praying get them medical attention or education?
Do they feel loved or wanted because you pray for them?
If you care then you do something, not pray someone else does.
The fact is family has lost its meaning and a way of life has been lost.
Forget about the village
Bringing back the concept of family could cure many of our social ills.
Also I cannot accept the use of the word parasite.
Anybody got a smoke?

One conclusion I've come to in this basement level of discussion is, it isn't worth arguing with this type of animal (as they consider themselves). Why would we expect anything greater to come out of their mouths?
FWIW a human organism can feel pain and is conscious of his or her enviroment at six months of age and can also survive on his or her own.
Kicks, hiccups, cries, sucks her thumb and is a miracle to anyone blessed enough to be her 'host'.

i lost the post i was writing and not in to retyping it but wanted to say one last thing before i drifted back into my little world i am very thick skinned and because i honestly believe in the individual's right to choose for themselves what is best i could careless about words like parasites - in fact i've got two "ex-parasites" sitting next to me as i type this - and i could love nothing more than i love them. in my mind they are not demoralized nor dehumanized by someone elses choice of words to describe a state of being we all go through. though i would agree that this type of language does create unnecessary drama which has ended up distracting from the core discussion.
i also want to say that my kids are here because i chose to have them - no one forced me, no law made me carry them to term - i did it of my own free will and love every minute of it (well most days anyway and we homeschool so it's truly 24/7 so that's a lot together time) and since there is no shortage of human beings in the world i would hazard a guess that many have made similar choices and as two moons talked about maybe we need to focus on those that are already born and have no one to love and care for them - essentially a quality of life issue rather then a quantity of life.

ps sam1427 if the professor's views are as you state i still believe it is an irrational & absurd argument and without further investigation would consider the posibility that his agenda is most likely to discredit the pro-choice position - it's been known to happen
