Shadow

Shadow, Jake and Riley is the name of the episode.

Basically anyone who watches The Dog Whisperer on National Geographic has witnessed a 'hanging' and people still use and swear by Cesar Millan's methods so I think that answers part of your question Maggie.

happyday:  Rest assured, the supposed incident relayed by the ex-clerk on her website, the one where the husband strangled a dog while his wife beat and kicked the dog never actually  happened.

You used the term incorrectly because you don't have any clue of what you are talking about.  It must be difficult for you,  going through life never quite understanding what goes on around you.

Terminology is a problem. A 'hard" dog is not necessarily an "aggressive" or "vicious" dog. They can be one and the same, but not always. Our Ozeta is a really "hard" dog when it comes to pain and corrections. She is also a completely sweet, social, and friendly dog.

I have a very "hard" dog I am training now.  I bred her, sold her, received her back at 3 yrs. old.  She has never bit me...has thought about it.  Although, she had a lot to overcome.  I hated her............now I adore her.  The difference is training.  I do not tell my dogs no...not when they are puppies, not in training, not in living with me.  Negatives are not something a dog can be successful at.  I use replacement behaviors.  I have sent my bitch to retrieve a dumbbell, early in her retrieve training, when she stood over it, looked me dead in the eye and growled.  What would you do say "No...puppy, please don't do that"?  Sure that would work fine!!LOL  I had enough control and pressure on her to go toward her, continuing to command "bring, bring, bring!"  and she chose the right thing to do.  She was then immediately praised!!  I did not throw my hands in the air and create a bigger problem.  Some dogs love to fight with their handler...don't go there. It can become a learned behavior.  I believe most  handler aggression is man-made and a reflection on the relationship between the dog and handler. The moral of the story is....sometimes it all depends on quick thinking, reaction, experience, knowing your dog, and staying neutral.  We need strong dogs in the breed, otherwise...we will continue to weaken the breed to uselessness.

And YES, if some have a hard dog, certainly get involved with a good, experienced schutzhund group.  These people need the help.  These dogs need the help.  Schutzhund teaches a dog where it is appropriate to use their aggression.  GSDs have been bred  to have suspicion and aggression, using it appropriately is a learned behavior.  Dogs do reason, but only with the information we provide to them.

I do not choke, helicopter, etc.....but I have seen it done.  It was a very experienced handler/trainer with a wigged out dog.  It was necessary to keep from being eaten up!!  Those were extenuating circumstances.  This was not a dog who ever layed on his back.  Many dogs are not submissive.  I don't have nor want submissive dogs.  The GSD breed is to be a strong, self assured, protective dog..........................so let's do schH to evaluate drives, train-ability, nerves, and courage.  I know my dogs will protect me. Many people just want to believe their dog will protect them.  Most would be in a heap of trouble, if they really needed protection.

Don't judge schutzhund trainers or all police dog trainers, by the antiquated training exhibited in the article. Use your head.

maggs why have you accepted what you read on a website written by an ex-clerk as gospel when not one shred of evidence or one iota of  documentation has been published on that website to substantiate ANY of  her myriad of allegations?   What, it's a massive conspiracy, all the various law enforcement agencies and all schutzhund clubs have conspired to discredit her?  And to what end, maggs?  What would be the possible reason for all this cover up?   because, what - we all use these techniques to beat our dogs into submission?   This is where, what I will term loosely as your "logic" really falls apart.  People who train in schutzhund adore  their dogs, LEOs consider their dogs their partners, if they didn't they wouldn't be doing what they do - it's not like anyone is getting rich off schtuzhund or being a LEO with a K9.

This is a sickening practice.  No one should grow insensitive to it.  We do much worse to many animals, of course, and they all deserve our protection.

If I saw this in practice, I would make a ruckus and intervene if I could do so without getting shot.  I hope many of you would join me.
