No one tried to make entry.

Dispatch? haha

by Jehannum on 30 May 2007 - 21:05

It seems to me that the whole issue of the right or wrong of it hinges on one question:

Was the dog tied when the shooting occurred?

Everyone "implies" that he was but is there any evidence that the chain was broken before or after the shooting?

Without a clear and proof positive answer to that question, as a logical person I cannot form an opinion on the issue because the facts are not, and sadly may never be really known. It seems to me that those that are jumping to conclusions are acting on emotion rather than the facts. Believe me, if it comes out 100% that the dog was tied and shot, I will be extremely outraged and I will do my letter writing and voice raising.

Dont get me wrong, I am so sad about this and very disturbed. My heart breaks for the family's loss. I have lost dogs before to bad circumstances and it is hard to ever recover.

Personally, I would never leave my own dog tied out on a porch on a choker chain for 100 reasons that have nothing to do with an officer shooting my dog. Now it is 101 reasons not to tie a dog out. I hate to sound insensitive, but as dog owners we have a responsibility to protect our dogs from harm, and harm comes in many guises and forms. 200 bucks at home depot for a sectional kennel probably would have saved the dogs life.

It would have been better for dog to be in the house, if he was to protect the premises   Cant protect the premises in a $200.00 kennel?  What would be the law if the officer opened the back door and the dog bailed out on him. Does a warrant allow to open a screen door or any door to see if anyones home? No but if dog was behind the door he could have jumped on door and busted thru it....when a situation like this is occuring, its a no win no win sitution all the way around.....I wouldnt have a shepherd in a kennel to protect my family . , but I have a completely fenced acreage, and sign up that say if found on this property at night, you will still be here in the morning.......and I kennel my breeding dogs but my two main kids stay in house and of course I have inside kennels for emergency use for many reasons, but if Im not home and someone comes to the door, over the fence, they will be met with a four legged creature with teeth....

Bottom line...the blue line runs deep...this will eventually be covered up, no matter what the "public" does or thinks about it.  Whatever the fact are, since the Officer was the only one on the scene, what he says will be "the truth", and whatever the evidence shows will not matter.

Very sad fact, but the truth! :-(  I don't agree with what happen, but don't agree with the dog being tied out either.  But it's not my place to judge.  WE can all have opinions, and we know what the old saying is about that! ;-)  For some of us though, I will simply leave you with this...

"BETTER TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT AND LET PEOPLE THINK YOU ARE STUPID, THEN TO OPEN IT AND REMOVE ALL DOUBT"

You should heed your own advice, you sound like a real idiot.

ladywolf, please rememeber, the blue line runs deep but, in 2 ways. The first being officers taking care of fellow officers, being there to back them up, being there when we grieve, being there to support our families, etc...  Then, the other line of corruption and greed with a few select officers who made it in into the system. Those corrupt officers will be weeded out eventually, They always do.

Last week, I arrested a Sgt. at a corrections center for having sex with female inmates. He would offer to take them to the kitchen at night and let them have extra food and goodies in return for sex. Trust me, eventually, all the bad ones weed themselves out!  ;)

I have tried to stay out of this.

But I wanted to tell you that you all draw your conclusions from just one side and from the links to that online tabloid who is obviously in contact with the family. This particular tabloid also does not show any hesitation to take photos of accident victims. Also, they published an email from somebody from Oregon with its painful grammar and spelling errors. IMO, that is a bad editing job, unless they wanted to "mock" that writer. I just mention that so you might get an idea what you are dealing with. More factual media here would be on www.somdnews.com or www.wtopnews.com. While I know that you all mean well in your outrage, you should not overlook some facts.

The dog was tied up on a nylon rope with nobody home? That is blatantly irresponsible. When a dog is aggravated and the adrenaline is up, will it hold the dog (how many pounds was this dog?) or not? This family lives on Route 231, a busy highway with a lot of traffic (it connects Hughesville, Charles County with Calvert County across the Benedict bridge). Their property was not fenced in. Need I say more?

Seven rounds? Somebody mentioned that the cop must have reloaded. No, a semi-automatic holds 12 rounds in the mag and the 13th in the chamber.  How many rounds to the head does it take to kill a dog? Not seven!!!! If I remember correctly the dog was still alive when the son came home. Where did all these rounds go to? Was the cop a bad shot, or did he possibly fire a few warning shots into the ground?

Did the collar break due to a round or did the dog break it by charging at the officer?

As to the cut-off head: That is standard procedure in a bite incident, when the animal is deceased. Even if there was not a visible wound. It is a matter of possibly contaminated saliva. A rabies certificate is just a piece of paper. Who is going to vouch for that? Of course, the family was very agitated about that, I would have been to. A bit more restraint in respect to the family's feelings and emotions would have gone a long way.

I am not trying to defend anybody but I truly think that people should think a bit more objectively. Hopefully, an investigator will be able to shed more light into the matter.

As to media coverage: This story was mentioned one time, just like other incidents and that was it.  I asked a couple of people who live close by about it and I only received a blank stare. My vet did not know anything about it, and he is very involved in this area with the humane society and animal control. He rescues animals on a regular basis and takes care of them. He owns the only Emergency 24 hour Care Vet Hospital in the area. In addition, he is a very wellknown longtime breeder of Briards. Shouldn't there be more of a public outcry and exposure, if this officer was truly such a gun-happy killing machine? Not even our radio station had a report on that (98.3 FM, So MD News)? And I can assure you, we in Southern Maryland are perfectly normal nice people, lol!  And Charles County is part of the Washington DC Metro area. We commute to DC every day. So most people here are pretty educated.

BTW for whoever this fits: Impersonating a police officer is a felony and punishable with a minimum of 1 year in prison.

Why does everyone call it a nylon rope? Right off at just a glance I pegged it as a cable line with a yellow rubber over it. When I had to tether my dogs, that is exactly what I used, except mine was red not yellow. No chewing free or breaking from wear and tear. They sell them at Petsmart or any other pet store. Likelyhood of that snapping, is slim to non, unless it was at the snap and we can see in  the picture the snap was intact at the dogs end. Who can say if it was broken at the other end where tethered or even what the line was anchored to? No one has even brought up the question what was the dog tied to? Could have been a tire or cinder block the dog could have slowly drug. Should have been something solid, like a pipe going into the ground.

Too many unknows to make a sure call, yet in my heart of hearts 7 shots was 6 too many. Fault can be put on just about everybody in this senario, except the dog.
