As a breeder of East German Shepherds, I was contacted by this family very shortly after Max was shot.  Upon reading that he was tied on the back porch when killed, I was smacked with a moral dilemma.  I know the extreme grief of losing a dog, and yet I am rabidly against chaining a dog.  Would I love to be a part of the solution to ease their pain and get them another pup? You bet.  Would I do it before they have a proper fence or kennel? Not a chance.  I am also a retired Police Officer, so I have sat quietly and read post after post after post on this subject, and there are a couple of things to be considered here - Does the community in which they live have an ordinance which prohibits KENNELS? Many do!  Can they afford a good fence, and can they get a PERMIT for one sufficient to contain an adult German Shepherd???  Until they have a good fence and/or kennel, I just cannot in good faith send a puppy there, much as I would like to help ease their pain.  Any monies sent to them should be used to buy fencing and/or a kennel BEFORE they look at getting another pup.

No Altostland, the community does not have any ordinance to prohibit kennels or fences.

live4schutzhund,  again My deepest appologies,  I felt really bad about that,  I should have clarified what I was saying...  Yes they had inquired about how to look for a good breeder and a good dog,  I read your post and just with the conversations I've had with Sharon,  Nothing could be further than what the post relayed to me...  With that being said I hope you understand YES I am admitting I read the post and took immediate offense to it.  Again I appologize,  it is my error and my emotions that got away...  Please forgive me.

Let me contact sharon,  and see if she has a PO Box that can be posted for donations....  or if they would rather the donations be sent to an Organization in Max's name,   How is that for now ??

I must really be one of the horrible people.  6 years ago I was told that  Reno would die within 3 to 6 months due to a cancerous sinus tumor.  I could not stand the thought of losing her and coming back to an empty house.  She was diagnosed in August and I picked up Libby in September.  Reno lived an unbelievable 6 years longer.  The tumor never spread and the vet could not explain it.  Everyone handles grief differently, there is no right or wrong way, just they best way we know how.  How can anyone accuse someone of not caring for their pet because they make a choice to bring another into their lives.  To me it is a great tribute to our gsd's that they have had such a profound impact on our lives, that we could not imagine spending our lives without one.  I don't know the Mattia family or the officer.  But regardless if the LEO was within rights or not or that this family tied a dog out or not, with a choke chain that may have or may not have been on the non choke ring, a beautiful gsd died doing what he was bred to do.  I think that the reason this topic won't die is that everyone on this board, regardless of which side we are on in this debate agree on one thing.  It is all about Max and we just have a horrible time accepting the way he died.

Echo:  Can you also ask the family if they are planning to put up a good fenced enclosure?

Cheryl:  Well said.

Policemom:  I think everyone is waiting for this to  be organized properly, who to send the money to, etc..  After all, the OP only suggested this a few days ago!

I would think the owners have learned a hard lesson and would want to put up a fence before they get another dog.  I feel as many others do, a fence is mandatory, no negotiation, this is a "deal breaker".  I'm hoping Echo will be able to find out the details from the owners.

Look at the New Thread    NEW LINK TO HELP MAX  Please  everyone go there and post your thoughts and encourage them to investigate this issue along with other family pets that have been executed by LEO

Whoever posted the link about "precious" the Pit Bull Terrier needs to provide them with that link as well,  and write your thoughts on the phenomenon now known as  "Family pets are executed if they get in the way of Law Enforcement"   as the question... How are we to keep our pets "Safe" if they are not even Safe in our own home, backyard, garage,....

Maybe that's what should go on the poster ??

Just how is a family pet more important than the life and safety of a LEO?  I'm sorry for their loss.  I truly am.  But I think if my son is running through people's yards in pursuit of a felon and he happens upon a dog attacking him that he would shoot the dog rather than be attacked, maimed and possibly killed by said dog.  My son's life is more important than a dogs, especially when he is doing his job.  I pray to God that he never encounters this situation, but if he does I want him coming home in one piece.

Just how is one person's "Family" Member less important than anothers...  No one wishes ill toward your son Policemom it would be ill informed of you to presume anyone here would.
