If my memory serves me and at this advanced age one can never be sure of anything, the boys name was Rusty and that GSD named Rin Tin Tin is or was the reason I feel in love wit the breed...From the late 50s when I was a kid and watched shows like that  or Roy Rogers who had Bullet another GSD I knew then that there would only be one dog for me forever...A GERMAN SHEPERD...Back then he might have been the "standard" for the breed and there is no doubt by todays standards he is nothing like what most of us would have today...BUT he was responsible for the "dream" many of us had as kids as the dog to have and love forever even if its in our minds...Yes I agree he is not what I would want by todays standards but I think the point of this post was to remind us that he was the original "ambassador" of the breed back when most of us were either kids or young enough to be impressed by everything he could do...GO RINNY...

Think back to an easier more gentle time in our lives when we would sit in front of the TV and watch shows like Rin Tin Tin, Roy Rogers and Sgt Preston of the Yukon with what we thought were those magnificent GSDs by their sides, is it any wonder that the GSD became as popular as they did...Same with Lassie until he/she became so popular that they "bred" that breed to death...

Not looking for any arguments with anyone, this is a simple post about what inspired me to want only GSDs at my side forever and always...I believe that was the original intent of the first post here as well...

Have a nice day and relax, life is too short to get so upset over something so trivial...

Rob you made my point perfectly.  Thank you.  As for the crap that sueincc is posting on here, either she has a reading problem, a comprehension problem or a combination of the two.  The subject matter, ie the dog that inspired us to own gsds, is above her head.  It has nothing to do with the current kennel or their breeding policies.  So lets all just ignore her posts and continue on with our civil conversations about what a great inspiration Rin Tin Tin has been to us as children shall we?

I totally agree with you policemom.  She has gone a little overboard I would say on a lot of things on these post.  Thanks again for your post.

Excellent post, roborob! And that's exactly what the current Rin Tin Tin STILL represents: see this, the Canine Ambassador Club, that goes around to schools teaching kids about dogs and responsible pet ownership: http://www.rintintin.com/AmbassadorClub.htm

I remember someone telling me that the original Rinty (the one from the TV show, not the one from the 1920's) was not terribly well put together in terms of conformation. Obviously, since his descendants have been selected to resemble him and the original dogs, they share some of those faults. The very first Rin Tin TIn was grey, so most of the descendants are silver, grey or grey sable. Of course that's going to look 'washed out' to those of you who think the only desirable colour for a GSD is RED and BLACK!!

Do right cool picture!  You know you can photoshop your face on there and then show everyone he really is YOUR dog. LOL.  (he's MY dog btw)

The trouble with her is that she lacks the power of conversation but not the power of speech.

There you go again Sue... im tired of posting non-educational info (but i enjoy reading these recent posts of historical and sentimental value)...but I cant help but interject... why not open another topic that suits your taste...Yes, you may be right about the marketing scheme and that the pups are too pricey... But memories are priceless... You can say that you "dont breed"  because you have NO HEART to take care of the DAM nor the puppies... You only breed for the improment of the breed, but what do you do with the culls... dont say your dogs are all perfect because NO GSD is perfect ( I remember the post...GSD's only second to the best.) The reason why the GSD is not perfect is to have room for improvement..Is it because you did not have a good childhood???

Marci:  I don't even know what that statement means.  I never besmirched the original dog or anyones memories of same.  Funny how conversations degenerate into personal attacks when logic fails you.  As to those making the personal attacks, flame on, I will consider the source & continue to laugh.

How about we keep the reminiscing to this thread and discuss the evils of breeding and marketing elsewhere...that would make everyone happy right?  That way everyone gets to say their piece and we can argue in a thread that is meant for discussion rather than in this one...which really is not.

I would love to have one thread where we didnt start hurling attacks...these memories and the remeniscing shouldnt be besmirched by that.

Thanks

well said Ceph (Cate).  I love old t.v. shows that i dont have to worry if my children will repeat something they heard from it.  They learn about courage and integrity and character.  I think in some ways we humanized Rin tin tin and he became more than just the ideal "dog" he was the ideal.... period.  Kind of a knight in furry armor.
