Yellowrose, this page on Tina's website will most likely tell you what  you need to know: http://www.shilohshepherds.info/intro.htm

If you want the full story, Tina has written a book about it: Against the Wind: A Breed is Born .http://www.shilohshepherdstory.com/

By the way the book is EXCELLENT.  I learned a lot of things and I have a lot of respect for Tina.   Sunsilver have you read the book?

Barber,
Once upon a time I was actually looking at purchasing a Shiloh. My initial thoughts after reading about your dogs was that you cared a great deal about what you were producing…but, the further I read on your site and on the net in general, I also saw that you were very angry and frustrated over some of the people who had purchased your dogs and then began breeding them outside of your authority. That is understandable, you are the breed founder.

But then I read on your site even further and I began to see displays of your temperament that I though were questionable – calling the splinter dogs stupid, laughing at them and their owners at rare breed shows, stalking these rare breed shows with cameras, generally harassing people at these gatherings, getting into arguments with these people on the web. You came off as emotionally unstable and unprofessional, just to be honest. It made me question whether a purchase made from you would be wise.

Of course, I have also heard stories about you selling dogs with health issues and ignored the complaints of disatisfied owners or refusing to honor health guarantees, how you use your own method of checking hips and elbows as opposed to the established medical standards – while these “testimonials” can obviously be taken with a grain of salt because this very database forum hosts public lynchings of breeders on a regular basis, all the adverse information just congealed to form a negative cast about you and your breed. I actually find this very disappointing because I was intrigued by the beauty of the dogs, but the fighting amongst the different “splinters”, the acerbic nature of the breed founder, the physical ailments that afflict too many of the dogs, the questionable health guarantees, and lastly the exorbitant price for pet quality dogs ($1500) = absolute turn off for someone who was once very interested in the breed, just the opinion of someone who almost bought a dog from you.

hello, new here.

firstly i own a shiloh that i am proud to say i bought from tina barber. i am not a first time dog owner; and have owned a gsd/mix in hte past. firstly, my pooch is an ablosute mush around the family, friends and strangers. the most dangerous thing about her is her tounge which she loves to use. i bring her to the local dog park every week. she has yet to act in an agressive manner to anyone or any other dog, even when the other dog is acting that way to her. she does not tuck her tail and run, she merely runs off, tail still wagging and finds another play mate who is more agreeable. she does this on her own. she is very smart and inquisitive. she is always sniffing around, i do wish i had the time to see if she would be interested in tracking and posible work. Shiloh's are wonderful family members. i guess mine is an exception because she loves to chase down balls that i throw, over and over! but who cares if your both having fun? if she has one big problem it is that she does not like the heat. she is far more active during early morning and just after sunset. i got my shiloh because i wanted a  shepherd with a dependable friendly temperment who could be counted on to be friendly with kids, teens, adults, friends and strangers. and that is exactly what i got. one day while i was walking her, she got swarmed by a group of six kids 8-12 years. she couldn't wait to meet them and play with them. she and the kids had a good time. not one yelp, growl, or snarl, NOT one. just tail wagging fun. that kind of confidence and temperment is something special that ISSR shilohs have.

"There are too many "breeders" in the game just to make a profit, including the founder."

Mrs. Barber cares greatly for her dogs and who she places them with. while i was waiting for my pup i had to descride in detail the kind of pup i wanted. what kind of activities i wished to do with the dog. and answer many other very detailed questions before tina started contacting me by phone! she wanted to be as sure as she could that she placed the right pup in right home the first time! this takes time, patience and effort, a lot of effort. some of our conversations took over three hours, each. if she were just interested in the money...why invest so much time and effort? it doesn't add up! she does this because she care greatly where her dogs end up.

i love my shiloh very much and would not consider any other type of dog for a family.

vonissk, I have the book on order, and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. I was supposed to get it as a Christmas present, but for some reason the order never went through!

"how you use your own method of checking hips and elbows as opposed to the established medical standards..."

???? EXCUUUSE ME?? Tina uses both pennHip and OFA. She feels PennHip is more accurate, as it gives you a percentage, as opposed to just scoring the hips 'good' 'fair', etc. If you're not familiar with Penn Hip, I suggest you check it out!

Sunsilver - The all caps and 500 question marks were hardly necessary. Look up the term "taken with a grain of salt".

I do not have enough info on Shilo's .I am sure many who are interested in this breed  love them  however I did have a proplem with the breders statement  of German bred dogs

"(2)The German Imports on the other hand have excellent strong protective instincts, but they have been bred mainly for Schutzhund competition only. Since Americans pay thousands of dollars to import 'Working' dogs, the competition to produce hotter-tougher-harder specimens became intense. Price wars saw many inferior animals being brought in because they were cheaper and still considered Imports. These dogs have been bred here, resulting in polluting the good blood that had also been imported.

Many of these dogs stay in a continuously "hyper" stage, constantly looking for "action," and therefore do not make good house pets or companions for the average family. "

I disagree with Miss Parker on that one . Many Schutzhund titled dogs live in families along side small children etc. Just recently my SchH3 IPO3 titled home bred  girl had pups  pups and mother where in my kitchen my 18 month old grand daughter sat on the dog bed and the bitch scooted over so she could lay her head in the toddlers lap. I am sure she is not the ONLY dog titled in schutzhund over german lines that display this type of temperament . Her mother was the same way alos german also titled.

My current male was lying  next to me at a recent  cook out after a dog trial  when this little boy of 20 months climped on  him even the judge  took a deep breath  because he saw the dog 1 hour earlier and judged him in protection. I told the little boy to sit next to the dog and not to climp all over him :))    I am very sure that he is not the only strong working dog out there with a clear HEAD . Plus he is awesome to live with :)

He could  but a low keyed Shilo to shame when it comes to staying calm in every day situations :))

comment ... any large dog no matter what breed including the Shilo  an eye must be kept on such large dog when interacting with children .Owners must know their dogs well before allowing interactions with strngers especially children.

Miss Parker created a totally different Shepherd  kudos to her I personally would not own one  . To tarnish  other lines without having statistics on them I find just tasteless  just to make her creation  shine brighter !!!

working line german shepherd dogs are the most versatile German Shepherd in the world  ! and that is a fact !
