I would actually be spot on to say that is a major reason my dogs haven't worked toward their first title yet - this attitude scares me off literally.

I also am not really interested in Show or Schutzhund but want to raise shepherds for something more worthy like SARS or Disabled people but know to do so I have to breed them also so I can get pups to train.  I am not rich, but we did purchase 25 acres with this goal in mind.

I also believe Sch training is too agressive if you want a family protection dog.  This instinct is totally natural to them and it does not have to be refined.

Just a note - our local k9 police (Palm Beach county) state very recently to me that they are starting to shy away from Sch trained dogs as they have to do too much un-training and are looking at starting their own breeding lines internally.

I must admit, when I saw your handle, "flipfinish", I did not expect you to be making these comments! I will second Blitzen's nomination, purely on the "elitist" mentality comments!

WorkinDog,

you'd be amazed at what so called decent breeders and trainers have written emails to me about their own brethrens whom they sit down to have beers in the evening and discuss dogs.. If I show you the content it'll take your pants off figuratively speaking. So lets not go on a witch hunting drive here ok.

I have no guilt - I live my life that way.  I speak from the heart and desire good things for all.  My german shepherd took a bullet meant for me when I was 17 and I most likely would not even be typing here if it wasn't for her.  My love of this breed and desire to help not hurt them is genuine and sincere.

I hope wel all take a long look and listen to the words knowing I have no reason other than I am wanting to see change, go read some of the posts on www.bimmerfest.com

You will see what a "community" looks like.....

flipfinish, with that attitdue we could all change the perception of our beloved breed. I really think it is the insurance companies that we need to educate first. Breed banning, S/N  will not correct dogs at risk/risk to public. But education and forced training of all dogs/owners will bring the numbers down. So it is the underwriters of the insurance companies that we need to educate. Also, the city goverments, instead of us fighting the laws, they continue to try and pass and always for us it is defense. We should take the offense and Put up legislation we can all live with, that would improve pet ownership. Buy a puppy, mandatory training for the pet and the owner., it is the only way to educate the public to responsible dog ownership. it also may keep a few dogs out of hands that should not own a dog.

It could go someithing like, purchase a pup and pay for the cost of training at the same time, or bring in proof to the breeder that you have paid for training prior to pick up of the puppy.  Make training fees nonrefundable. Banning the dogs from being in public is defeting the socialization of the dog and adding to the problem.

There is enough of us on this board, and if I remember correctly, we have some attorneys here also. if we all work on this together, I really think we could do it. If we do not save our right to own and take our dogs out, Sch wil not even be an issue unless we move to cockers for sch.

I will be away for a few days so I don't want any of you to think you scared off this new BYB, money hungry, no nothing about the breed "newbie".

We have to go give one of our pups to a steller retired K9 cop who went into a deep depression when he retired and they did not allow him to keep his K9 partner.  Thought this may shake him out of it a bit - $1500 is a small price to pay back to this person who kept my neighborhood safe for 20 years.

Oh I forgot I was only in it for the $$$$$$$.  I just realize that many speak from sheer ignorance - you yourself will be judged according to how you judge others and it was never given to you as a job in the first place.

Thankfully I do have the ability to ignore most people.  I can't hear you if you aren't speaking constructively. Keep the viciousness out of your tone, the holier-than-thou attitude and you can (and should) grow an awesome community.  You came into this world butt naked like the rest of us and no two people walk the same path but we all end up in the same place.

This is the best one that I have read over the years! Flipfinish told how I feel! I am trying to find a club that I can work my dogs at and I  am worried that I will not beable to find one that will like my showline shepherds that I know will work. I thought that the problem was just in my area, but I guess not!

Idoggie2

I like your attitude and way of thinking. I agree with you that mandatory pet/dog ownership training is what is needed most. If all dogs where properly socialized that would cut down on half the problems right there. I know the Army has taken a step in the right direction at some of there Bases any way, in only allowing certian breeds in base housing if they have a CGC. Thats a start. We need more of this kind of thing going on. More public awareness of what a well trained and socializied dog is all about whether you do Sch, Show or some other avenue of dog sport/work.
