Why Oh Why, do ya'll keep harping on this "got to be titled to be bred" stuff?  I don't get it.  Is your momma and daddy titled.  Doctors of Esquires or Earls?.

Millions of dogs are bred without titles.  How many Beagles have titles?  How many Chihuahua's?

There ARE show dogs, including German Shepherds, that do not have titles, that are perfectly fine to breed to produce more show dogs.

There are family pets out there, that are German Shepherd Dogs, that have proved to their owners, that they have what it takes to produce very nice family pet GSD puppies.

I keep making the point that the NUMBER ONE use for a GSD is a family pet, companion and protector.  I keep making the point that the NUMBER ONE most honorable position a GSD can hold is to be a family pet. companion and protector.

C'mon folks.  If you breed a Schutzhund 1 dog, that really does not do very well (read the many posts recently whereupon people have told of purchasing titled dogs that knew NOTHING, and the many posts from people who are in the know, telling how titles can be bought) to a GSD with a herding title, then what exactly are you breeding.  You could get the same thing by breeding a Rottweiller with a Blue Heeler.

The family protector, companion and pet is the MOST NOBLE of all of the GSD's out there.  Cadaver dogs are nice.  Narc and bomb sniffing dogs are nice.  Police and military dogs are nice, but give me the dog that my kid can stick a pencil in its ear and not get bit.  Give me a dog that barks at every stranger that comes on my property, and quiets when I tell it to.  Give me a dog that lies at my feet, just touching me ever so slightly because it wants to be close to me.  Give me a dog that plays with my pet parrot without hurting it.  Give me a dog that by just being there, gives my wife peace of mind when I am gone.  Give me a dog that I know for a fact will be barking his head off, if someone comes to my front door when I am not home.  Give me a dog that hides when he has done something wrong, like digging into the garbage can for whatever smell is there.

Yes, titled dogs are nice and I wish more of them lived in thier owners homes.  But many do not.  HOw many Schutzhund titled dogs will put up with a grandchild pulling on its ears or stepping on its paws?  My dogs will and if it happens, will slowly get up and walk into the next room and lie down behind a chair, so the brat kid may not spy it.

I am not saying to just breed any ole GSD.  I am saying that people with experience and knowledgeable about dogs, can make rational decisions about breeding this or that GSD, without the dog being titled.  How many of you breeding titled dogs actually breed in the FRONT yard?  Hmmm

Okay.  I'm ready.  Let's get to it

My point was this...no OFA and 1 year old. I mentioned titles because the "BREEDER" was mentioning it. I have no problem buying a pup from anm untitled dog. As a pet pup though I would like to see OFA or  Penn Hip . How about a CGC or a Therapy dog. Otherwise all you are doing is becoming another byb.

k9sar, you tried and got others to try.  Can't ask for more then that.  Good for you all to make the effort.

And congrats again on your dogs certification.

"Why are you offering a 1 year old , untitled dog for stud?"

Okay, so I guess you really meant to type "Why are you offering a 1 year old dog for stud?"

We could debate that also if'en ya like.

One year olds are absolutely perfect for breeding, according to nature.   Can't I even get a good discussion anymore.  Everyone seems to want to just gorilla warfare and then dissapear.  No one wants to have an intelligent discourse of ideas on any subject anymore, without name calling and crap.  C'mon folks.  I need to keep my mind sharp.  Gettin old ya know and execising my mind (and body) is of paramount importance now.  Tell ya what.  I'll tie one half of my brain behind my back, just to make it fair.  Somebody be my Huckelberry, won't ya.

I need to get a life

Do Right- A very intelligent man who'd been working and studying dogs for longer than most of us youngin' have been alive and knows pedigrees better than Jesus knows the bible told me in a nutt shell the same thing you said.  He broke it down for me quite simple- you can change training but you can't change genetics.  If a dog is bred genetically correct he can work with the right training.  And this man incidentlly is involved in the sport and he's titled his own dogs but he's also bought dogs from an untitled parent and then had them titled.  So he's proven his own theory to be correct.  You won't get an argument or debate out of me on this one because that makes perfect sense to me but I'm sure you're gonna rattle someone's cage around here that just might wanna do a shake down. lol

I'd be interested in hearing from those that disagree with this theory to explain their own.....perhaps they will change my mind; after all I am an open minded person.

Do Right: Read the thread ALphapup just put up if you want to discuss something....;the main lecture for the last month has been how and why and when to breed everyones dog., by the all knowing,,,,now we have a PHD in markieting that wants to tell everyone how to write their own ads and how to describe their own dog in doing so..... and if it not done just so ,,don't let them post it....

yellowrose- I went to the thread I think you were talking about.  Was it the one with the Youtube video on the shelter dogs?  Yes that IS awful but I think I should stress that I wasn't implying it's OK for just any ole body to go out and start breeding dogs.  No No that was not at all my point.  By me agreeing with DoRight I meant that it would be fine IF it were an experienced breeder, knowledgable breeder who knew exactly what they were doing and trying to accomplish.  Perhaps it would be a circumstance that the 1 dog you were breeding to did not have a title because it's owner wasn't into the sport but the dog had training, was the total package, with a complimenting pedigree and was going to ad to your goals, why turn this down because of a title?  Now if the dog was garbage then of course it would NOT be "OK" regardless if it had a title or not.  And there are dogs that pop up in the ads even around here that people wouldn't give 2 nickles for but their being advertised as suitable to breed....just had to clear that up before things got twisted or misunderstood.

Bottom line is the title in effect do not matter nor enhance the quality of the title. You do get some assurance with a title on the quality of the dogs being breed. On the down side are breeders who "baby" a dog to get a title.

The worst scenerio are the people who are clueless and breed whatever dogs that happen to fall intop their hands.

A good dog person can pick and breed quality with or without a title.

IMO it is best to go with a titled dogs and the other choice is from workingline certified dogs. Not all are breeding quality but quite a few are very superior working dogs. ALL BREEDERS SHOULD KNOW THE GSD BREED AND RESEARCH BEFORE BREEDING. Of course many will never do so and even some good breeders get caught up needing to turn a profit and lower their requirements.

Do Right n Fear N One, I am starting to feel the same way after WASTING SO MUCH TIME with certain people  in this game. It is especially fraustrating when you have decent dogs and would of liked to participate. At the end of the day ,Is it really that important to title a dog? Will that same dog do what it takes if you are ever in harms way?Either way i will still enjoy my dogs and hopefully we will find some other REAL LIFE ,hands on type of training.Good post
