yellowrose of Texas

more excited every minute, lunging and jumping to tell me, where is he, Im ready ,,,let me at him,,,,,and your arms and shoulders are now getting tensed and you get in place and trainer advises what todays routine is....so let the game begin and when finished you are out of breath , worn to a frazel, and legs have travels over rought terrain, held the dog pulling with a 2000 lb bit on the front side ,back and forth with the encouragement,,,then the bite.,,,,release back to truck....ok lets try another way,,,,,regroup you and dog, and hes high and you are in control and takes every muscle and ligament as you go thru the next task your trainer gets you into......praising your dog , bending over him, slapping him hard on side,,encouraging him, and the running away and back to truck...then the other 10 routines of the DAY  jUMPING THE HURDLES, SCALING THE CLINBING WALL  RETRIEVING OVER THE wall,. runaways, retrieves, send aways, recalls, down from a run practice, then the blind work , bark and hold teaching, Revier teaching, working dog with dumbbell, getting ready for miles of running...and wow   no exercise for the rolly polly woman on the other end of the leash......

You can sweat off 3 lbs every time you go to training, so Im lost to the thread, as the Schutzhund my partner and I were doing, certainly was no piece of cake , with icing and icecream served....we were exhausted and could barely walk when done....everyone , including the trainers, helpers and husbands and wives not training get a work out indeed......

I couldnt handle a tougher , more grueling sport...

Yellowrose - maybe it depends on the "brand" of schutzhund being practiced. Sounds like you  participate in "Cardio-Calorie" burning version

well, now let's talk about the flip-side of the coin:

what about those skinny little gals that don't have enough strength to hold their own dogs in protection?????

this has always been a major peeve of mine.  it is my sincere belief that if you don't have the strength to hold your own dog, then you have no business working protection.  i'm not talking about one isolated incident.........an injury or recuperation after surgery, etc.  i'm talking about little "bird women" who come to train every week, but need a strong guy to hold the dog for them.  that is such b.s.  maybe i shouldn't have even gotten started on this, but like i said, its a major peeve of mine.

Fluffy came after smoking left.     So which is healthier?  Smoking and less weight?  Or not smoking and fluffy?   My Doc says not smoking....

ziegenfarm--i would think that the "skinny little bird women" are the ones that need to have the protection the most, i would assume if someone was trying to attack her she would not be worried about holding her dog back... there is no reason to call someone names ...like i said above refering to skinnny person with mean names is no different than calling somone fat.

I find this topic a bit rude. I am heavy. I have rebuilt my ankle trying to get back to who I am, but  it is not a hundred percent. I am asthmatic and also have diabetes. I have always been an active person but sue to extensive ankle injuries and pain my weight got higher than my ability to excersize it off. Do I like this in me? hell no! Don't assume when you see a heavy person they are lazy or unhealthy in thier choices. I love my dogs and I love working them and used to be one of you slim fit folks, and inside I still am. I do not eat fast food, preservatives, or sugar. I eat low carb. I force myself to excersize through the pain on a bad ankle and I have braced it up to double handle my dog and huff and puffed round the ring with love of my dog. The next time you go eeew why dont you get to know that person and who they are instead of what you think you see.

Well coming from someone who's been on both sides of the fence I was overweight at one time and then lost a significant amount to the point I am a tiny thing now.  It has it's advantages and disadvantages now for me.  The pros now are that I'm more energetic, I feel better as a whole, I don't have the aches n pains in my legs, knees, ankles and back that I did when I was FLUFFY. lol  The cons to it are that I'm always cold lol, and I probably could handle my big dog a little easier in bitework if I had a little more padding all over, oh and it actually hurts now when I take a spill on my ass since there's less cushion their for the added protection. lol

The reality is as we get older our lifestyles become more demanding with work, kids ect and we have less time to take care of ourselves as we'd like.  Always on the run makes for unhealthy eating habits and less time for workouts.  I'm guilty of it myself BUT since I went through hell and back to lose this weight and managed to keep it off for several years even after having a new baby I make it a point to set out at least a half hour each day to give myself some sort of exercise.

I think people that look at one's outward appearance are shallow.  JMO. lol

GSDNewbie,  I do not believe this was meant to be rude or insulting.  I know many people with health issues which have caused some weight gain, that does not mean those individuals are looked down upon.  If anything some seem to be held in higher regard for continuing on with what they love.  I have herniated disks and now a bad knee.  Won't stop me but does slow me down at times, which yes, does affect how successful excercise is.

nope, i gotta stand by what i said.  if they can't handle their dog, they'd better get a gun or at least a canister of pepper spray.  its alot safe than having a protection trained dog that you can't control.  that's a bad situation.  the dog even knows he has the upper hand......not good.
