I hope that youtube clip wasn't supposed to be and example of what Max wanted. That bark and hold could put me to sleep, it was so un-intense. The only impressive part was when they sped up the dog running into the decoy and then in slow motion, you can see the decoy  jam the dog. VERY impressive indeed. I'm going back to sleep now...yawn.

I thought it was a pretty good example of extremely careful training, and what can be done with careful training. The dog wasn't all that bad either, as I have seen working lines that do not do as well.

More of a training issue that I see. Good thing he has Sch to do, as ring would be out of the question.

Jeff

You talk out of both sides of your mouth.  One minute you defend the dog and say he wasn't all that bad. Then you say ring is out of the question for the pooch.

That dog was flat, boring and had no intensity in the work. It was like he could care less about the helper, he was just trained to bark bark bark at the guy. NO aggression at all.  Don not deffending the Jeffster but he does have a point, this dog wouldn't make it in anything else but Sch. That is what is so frusterating about that sport. You can polish up the biggest turd and get him to pass.

Who's fault is that?  Tell the clubs out there to stop flying in the easy SV judge that is here for a holiday.  Maybe all the judges should be like Raino Flugge.  He has no problem failing your dog after you flew him in and fed him.  Hell i have even heard him ask, " are there any good dogs at this club?"    Even Bill Szentmiklosi is a real, fair judge.  Everyone knows who the easy judges are.   "Well what's her name is judging our trial, so I guess I'll get an FH this weekend."  BAM 100 pt. FH

Marci

What is the point to your links?  Was it to show that people are breeding GSD's for show?

Maybe the long bite for the dog Karlo on the 2nd link?  I would hesitate to criticize on the open forum.  Also one video may not be representational of the dogs best work, on the other hand I would perhaps want to put my dogs best foot forward if I were advertising him on a site.

For a showline dog??? See what I get for trying to be nice??? I guess thats what I get for not being consistantly against the showlines. I also think that Sch is a joke, and this turd was shiney. LOL

Seriously though, the bark and hold is the worst way to tell about a dogs character and aggression. Most of what I see is displacement behavior, and frustration. Think about how a dog would show dominence and aggression ANYWHERE else. Not going to be barking like an idiot or banging his paws off the ground. This was the bark and hold that I saw as a kid before they started wanting all that displacement behavior. It IS a well trained BH though.

With just a video, it is easy to just slam the crap out of the whole thing, but this dog did his job and was well trained. For a showline, I thought that the dog did well. I have seen working line GSD that cannot do as well as that dog did.

Just some things to think about with that sport. The lessor do a lot better than the higher dogs.  I see people's dogs put on a pedestal for winning, I see this as a pretty middle of the road to weak dog. I hear them talk about dominence and all this crap, but if the dog was truely strong, obedience is obedience is gonna get you hurt.

The bar is way too low, but in the above video, I have to give props to the trainers. Can you imagine what they could do with a really good dog, if they can make this one look good??
