i don't know much about all the stuff yall are arguing about, but i do know that this line------------>>>>

1-"Take this trouble for me: Make sure my shepherd dog remains a working dog, for I have struggled all my life long for that aim."

really makes me feel guilty about not being able to do more with my dog.

All of you-- if you go and read anything i have ever posted you will see that i have never fought or bashed or criticized anyone on this messageboard, i know i am not near as educated on the subject of breeding/training/ clubs/ shows/ whatever, as most of you are, i know i really have no right to step in and tell any of you how to do anything, but i have to tell you this---please stop worring and fighting about which club/show / dog/ whatever it is yall fight about -is better!  Atleast you belong to a club, atleast you get to go to shows, atleast you are involved in sch, or whatever it is you do with your dog, ATLEAST YOU GET TO DO IT!!

Think about this, you could be in my position and live on a budget where your dog could only go to a vet for a life or death reason, much less having the money to do any kind of training classes, I would love it just to be able to go to a puppy training class!. Atleast you have a dog, if mine had not been given to me i couldn't have afforded to even look at him! My poor dog just walks around sometimes whining a little, i believe because he is bored, he knows and i know that he should be doing more with himself than SIT, STAY, FETCH, DOWN. ( lucky for me my kids started back to school yesterday so i will have time to do more with him) but still, i don't really have the knowledge of what to do with him, how to train him for anything more, and i have no one to show me, like i said can't pay someone to show me.

So please be happy with whatever you are doing with your dog and don't bash others for whatever they are doing, atleast its something.

Julie:  There are many people who do nothing with their dogs yet don't even feel guilty about it!  I'm glad you are now in a position to do more with your dog.  Training in any sport is a ton of fun,  perhaps if you give us an idea of where you live someone might be able to point you in the direction of a dog sport club that would be able to give you some training guidance.

We may argue, fuss & fight but that's because we are passionate about our breed and as has been pointed out by many, our family is a   tad bit disfuntional.  If you stay on this board long enough you will find most of our barks are much worse than our bites and in the end, we come together over our love for the dogs.  As heated as our exchanges may become,  and as different in our opinions we are, we have more incommon than most - the GSD.

Sueincc---- yea i know..lol..i was just venting a little...besides, these message boards would get pretty boring without a little drama....i live in  franklinton La

Training is little more than taking an exersize and breaking it down into smaller parts, train the parts then put it together.

So what you have no one to show you. ASK. You have the internet. I did not have the internet and had to learn how to do many things on my own, and believe me, we didn't have any money back then.

So quitcher whinin, and ask us what you want to know.

Jeff-- i have been asking--believe me and i have been getting alot of help to, i've learned tons on this message board alone, but being told how to do something like that and actually being able to go to shows/ meeting people who have done it / seeing a trainer, it's a totally differtent thing. espc when you have no experiance at all. ..so O.k. i will ask...how do you teach your dog to stack? see before i didn't even know what stacking was, never even heard of it, much less try to train it. also how do you train a dog to heel and do a ---i don't even know what to call it to ask...lol.  um i think they call it  BH....walking in a patteren? how do i train my dog to track? how do i train my dog to protect me? How do i do all this with no experience and with no one with experience to show me? but, i have been reading lots and trying to watch videos (hard to do with dial-up) so i can atleast try to do it. i am also scared im goin to screw my dog up by training him wrong....

iluvmigsd:  Take 20.00 and go buy the book   The Theory and Training Methods of Schutzhund by Susan Barwig and Ray Hilliard.....Barmes and Nobel can order it or you can go to Ebay , and find it....for a beginner  , it tells you and explains lots of things.....it is a very simple book.....you will have fun with it....and learn about the right way and learn the words used by people on this site. ,,a lot.

by Puputz on 10 August 2007 - 05:08

The only way to learn how to do it is to do it...if it means falling flat on your face each time because there's no one around to teach you. Reading stuff online isn't going to make sense unless you've worked your dog and know what they're talking about and can apply it. I've been told a beginner will probably ruin their first five (some upwards of more) dogs anyway, so why do nothing? Do something and learn.

JEFF- your kinda mean huh? how was i whining..i was just trying to explain my situation... how is saying I WANT TO LEARN, even tho its gonna be a little more of a struggle for me than some to do it---how is that whining?.....whining would be:::oh, im not gonna bother, it's to hard, i CAN'T do it.etc..etc...see the difference? P.S.. sometimes it's harder to understand HOW to ask the question than it is to understand the answer...

YELLOWROSE---thanks..next time i go to books-a-million i'll look for it....

PUPUTZ---quote> Reading stuff online isn't going to make sense unless you've worked your dog and know what they're talking about and can apply it. < my point exactly...but i'm definitely gonna try...am trying....to do it without ruining my dog...i've already done more with this dog than with any i've ever had...and even if i can't go to sch or whatever, atleast it will give my dog something to do..

OK, first, I was not serious at all. I like hard dogs and hard people. : )

Quote:  i am also scared im goin to screw my dog up by training him wrong....

The first time you do anything shit goes wrong. As long asa you are not kicking the dog in the head, you can adjust what you have done.

Get Ivan's tapes or DVD's and there is a good start.

Heeling. I start with the concept in my head that this is a position, and not a command. I work on teaching the position first. I do so with food and I lure them into position. I hold my hand so that my thumb is on top of the "c" . I find that by moving my wrist I can get the dog to sit crooked or straight, or even walk crooked or straight. Try this at the house, don't try for fancy sits or anything, just stand next to the dog and get the dog to walk with his shoulder even with the center of your hip. Experiment a little and move your wrist and see if you can get him to cock his butt out while walking, or tuck it back behind you.

Then tell me how you did, or if you were able to figure it out. Other people have other ways, everyone has a favorite, this style is mine.

Since you are in Louisianna, maybe you are near Chris Duhon??? I am sure when he had the time he could help you out.

JEFF-- sorry i took it so seriously, heck it was me not to long ago saying that sometimes people on here are just jokin, but we take things the wrong way cause your just reading the words and not seeing the persons expression or hearing their tone of voice, easy to miss comunicate..

so.. back to the dog, ..main thing is just to try to get him to like walking right next to me right? with or without a leash? i tried doing it with a leash but we kept getting tangled so i guess i was doing it wrong...

BTW..  i live in the toe of LA...washinton parish
