Don I have to disagree to some extent.  Yes I don't like to see a dog as you explained with the hackles, but some of these frontal teeth shots are not as they seem.  Even catching a strong confident dog in the latter phase of a normal bark will appear this way.  I take lots and lots of pics, and do some part time photography www.beckerfoto.com .  I take numerous shots of dogs barking in training, rapid fire shots, and the end of a normal confident bark will appear this way.

The dog below is a dog from my club, he is as confident a dog as you can get, very clear in the head and strong dog, he has the perfect temperament for work, he is not showing his teeth or growling in the pic, it is a phase of a normal bark during the guard.

I totally agree with you about having the hackels up, that is not desirable...HOWEVER I do disagree with the comment made about the teeth and the ears.  If you see a bark in slow motion, as I have taking pics, you will see what I mean.

Regards,

Melanie

Melanie

You submitted a photo of a dog that has "mess with the bull, get the horns" above his head.  That dog has ears erect and he is only showning his front teeth.    The photo above is getting civil agitation.  At no point do I see them showing signs of stress, even if this was a video.  I just find it hard to say that the next frame woulsd show otherwise.  I understand what you are saying and could see the trickery of photography, but I dont buy that with some of these photos.

Don,

I understand what you are saying, I just wouldn't judge by just a photo, certainly what is going through some of their heads may be iffy

but I've seen lots of frontal teeth shots with ears back and can say with 100% certainty it is a normal part of a confident bark.  Some of the

dogsposted may not be in the right frame of mind but IMO you can't make that judgement from a photo.

Below I put in a series of shots of the same dogs so you can see the "next frame" what are your thoughts?

This one has excellent nerve - in a line of others doing drive-work

courage test -

Direct and confident - if not so graceful

nerve strength to die for - look at that eye contact under threat - ok there are some hackles up, but hey when you're only 5 lbs, gotta make yourself look as big as possible!
