I totally agree with 4pack on this, and that's how I sell my pups.  Limited until titled and passing OFA.

Birdy;  If you have a contract that states limited registration will be lifted upon met requirements, THE AKC WILL HONOR IT, without any necessary involvement of the breeder (now deceased).

Wow, Rezkat5,  that's crazy!

Daryl:  How does that work?  Does the owner mail copy of scorebook, ofa # or copy of cert., along with a copy of the original contract to AKC?  Can the breeder be left out of the loop entirely?

Entirely.  If those conditions are in the contract, the breeder couldn't stop limited registration from being lifted if they wanted to.  The breeder could be deceased, out of business, or whatever.

I'm not a breeder but as a buyer this is what I expect.

I expect limited registration that will be lifted if I title/OFA

I expect to pay the same price for a "companion" pup as show/work pup

I expect the same "warranties" to be given to all puppy purchasers

I expect the same breeder support to be given to all puppy purchasers

I guess perhaps what I'm saying is I feel like I'm paying for the knowledge and support of the breeder as well as the pup.

So, anyone have an amazing black sable male puppy?

Fillyone has described what my policies are - all puppies sold on limited registration, changed to full on completion of working title including Schh1, advanced AKC obedience (including jumps/retrieves), police or SAR certification, AND adult OFA passing hip rating.  If the owner has put the time and work into their dog and the dog turns out to be sound and proven for breeding in the same way I prove my own dogs for breeding, then of course they should be able to breed it if they choose to.  All of my puppies are sold at the same price, except for obvious pet quality due to  long coat, any fault eliminating them from breeding, or softer/lower drive temperament evident at 8 weeks old (that doesn't happen often) - and I provide as much breeder support as the owner wishes to ask from me, through the lifetime of the dog.  I never charge different prices for different "options" and in fact only give one option - registered, guaranteed puppies with a breeder who stands behind the pup for his/her lifetime.    It's the only thing I offer, and if I were a puppy buyer presented with the different prices per "option" I would immediately cross that breeder off my list and look elsewhere.

I do want to come back and say that I'm really not in the hunt for a pup right now, just dreaming

Thanks, Darryl !  My concerns were what would you do if the breeder went out of business or the situations Birdy mentioned.  Now that I know the buyer would deal direct with the AKC to get it amended to full registration, I wouldn't have any problem buying a pup on a limited registration.  My breeder does not do the "limited" thing, instead he feels as Johah does.

Will limited registration limit any AKC, USA, or WDA privileges, like obtaining show any ratings?
