I have always given my dogs fresh avocados, but check out the human food list provided below.  I feed quite a few of the food items listed.

I noticed your avocado information in the recent issue of ASPCA News Alert. Do you have any information about the safety of avocado in pet food?
—Nicole K.

Good question, Nicole. As you read in News Alert, avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as Persin. The Guatemalan variety, a common one found in stores, appears to be the most problematic. Other strains of avocado can have different degrees of toxic potential.

The safety profile of foods and other products formulated with avocado is a difficult question for us to answer definitively, because we do not know specifically how avocados are processed for these foods, what types of avocados are used, or what minimum dose of the toxic principle results in clinical effects.  Therefore, we have refrained from making an overall assessment of the safety or toxicity of products that contain avocado.

beetree just got back to this thread. Let me know how the Canidae going?? I fed the Chicken/Rice for a long time. Just  a little but over a long period w/o trouble. But I chucked about 2/3 a bag after I heard the Acetominophen thing. The store I buy from, the lady has been feeding it for 6 years w/o troubles. I hear this stuff though and I'm out of there....

I am feeding AvoDerm Lamb and Rice now and it rated 86 pts-B.....I just comapered the Pro Plan Selects Salmon and Rice and it got 110 A+... I think that I will be switching to the Pro Plan. Has anyone fed this one to their dogs? If so how did they do on it? One of my GSD's gets itchy on alot of foods. He is doing good on the AvoDerm, but I would like to find a food that I can feed to ALL my dogs.

Abhay I do agree that the Kirkland is hard to beat. It is a good food.

You may not be able to feed all the dogs the same food....every one has different needs.....Senior dogs need less fat and less protein to not kill the kidney function......give cranberry pills  or put a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in food..each day....rasing gsds are expensive....but interesting to try tips that breeders have done......peanut butter cookies for dogs is a fun christmas threat...  no sugar,,,,powdered milk and yogurt instead....

ok Im going to bed....

yellowrose of Texas .... thanks for the info. I looked up the menadione and I have decided to stay with the AvoDerm Lamb and rice. Our two males are doing VERY good on it. So I guess if they are doing good I should stay on it.

Old Roy?

You might as well feed the bag as the contents.

I have my adult dogs back on Canidae ALS for a second try. This time they are doing fine, good coats, good weight, good condition. Maybe a got a bad lot the first, time, during a heat wave in the summer. 400+ lbs. from one single shipment... No "runs" this time... Carol has been on Canidae Platinum (old fat dog formula) and thrives on it. His condition for the NASS was very good once he finally shed out his old coat and the new one started to come in. 4 month old Diva is on Eaglepack Hollistic Lg. Breed Puppy, also thriving. At $33.00 / 40# its a real bargain, too. I guess all those preservatives in some of the other crap are expensive. No need for preservatives around here. I go through 40# every 3-5 days, depending on how many dogs I have. I find I don't have to feed as much Canidae either. 2.5 - 3 cups a day is plenty for most of my dogs, but I do try ot keep them lean.
No more Euaknuba around here...

I am wondering if anyone has heard of the dog food Tuffy's Gold. I have never heard of it and was wondering if it is good choice or how it compares with some of the other brands mentioned.

Cool system, Abhay!

What do you do if your dog has to be vegetarian and there are no "meats" involved?
