i'd be willing to send some $ to help too. if it's a national bank, shouldn't it be easy to transfer into an account?

by Shandra on 04 November 2007 - 01:11

Hi ya'll, I had to work today grooming and didnt have pc access, the hotel I am intonight has very limited internet and it keeps dropping but it is something.

I completely understand the suspicions! I have helped people out before online and I was always suspicious. You can verify any and all information by calling 936-327-6810, that is the sheriffs dept, or by calling the Local EPA at 936-327-6820, Jay Barbee is the director of it. You can also call the Polk County Enterprise, the local newspaper, it was on the front page of sundays paper. They did not put my name but they put enough identifying info that anyone that knows me is going toknow, they also put a picture of my house. I am a very private person and them putting me out there like that is really disturbing to me.

Most of the symptoms have subsided, the metalic taste isnt as bad and the dizzyness isnt as bad either, the main thing now is my kidneys, they are hurting like heck and acting weird.

The dogs are still ok, I wish I could get into them, I am going to spend tomorrow trying to find someone that can tell these local yokels what can be done so I can get them out and taken care of.. The 2 little dogs, goldie is acting strange, like she doesnt feel good and had some blood in her stool this evening, Skeeter seems ok but his eyes are real watery. Nothing is open that will see them around here.

To those of you that tried to email me, Sometimes I get my email and sometimes I dont, if I get it I answer it, Sometimes my isp grabs innocent mail and holds it as spam then it takes a few days before it gets senton to me in my weekly batch.

I am overwhelmed by the offer of help, I dont know how to react to tell you the truth, I have never been on the recieving end, always on the giving end.

For those that are interested, we have First national Bank of livingston and First State Bank of Livingston and the Peoples State bank. I bank at the first state bank.

I gotta run and get justin something to eat.

Oh and for those that were asking, the red cross's involvments consisted of 3 nights at a hotel and 75.00 for a week of food and the offer of the first months rent exclusively on a rental. Everyone I have called also want last month and security, plus I will have to get the utilities on and furnishings. I havnt found a rental yet that doesnt require a 6 or 12 month lease.OMG the magnitude, I am now beginning to actually realize the extent and it is overwhelming, the things we take for granted, silverwear, a cup to drink out of, little things....

I am not one to not help someone in need. However, based on some of the things posted here, including by Shandra herself about her symptoms (green urine for example), I too am a little leery. The bottom line is that if this incident happened, Shandra can give any one of us the phone number of the local Red Cross, Sheriff or some EPA authority to verify this is going on. I would be willing to verify the incident. Those of us who want to help and donate can then send her a small donation to help and do so directly or through a bank account. As pointed out repeatedly, bank accounts to help people in need are set up all the time. And yes, I believe she did already say the Red Cross had paid for lodging for her. I think it is a reasonable request for the incident and consequences to be verified and then those who feel like they want to help can do so in good faith knowing that they really are helping someone in need.

Steve, Perhaps it would be valuable for you to read the original posts. And your facts are incorrect. Elemental mercury has a low vapor pressure, but yes, at ambient temperatures does indeed vaporize. It is the vapor that, in this case, is the real hazard for the persons involved. It is clear you do not know about the laws of the land. The amount of mercury alledgedly involved is way above the federal reporting threshold which is a single pound. If a single pound or more of elemental mercury is spilled anywhere into the environment in this country, it is reportable. And yes, being a former emergency responder, consultant etc., I can tell you that IF the situation is as reported, it may well take thousands and thousands of dollars to clean up the contamination, and/or the house and the ground to be completely demolished and removed. Only trained professionals should be involved in a spill of this magnitude. Finally, yes, mecury in various forms has been used in the past and still is in limited form. But the form the mercury is in is very different. There are huge differences in this metal, depending on its form, elemental, organic or inorganic. The EPA is Atlanta probably does not know anything about this. In any case, it is always a good thing to be careful when one thinks about sending money. The internet is a great place for scams, not saying this is a scam at all.

Steve, While I completely understand the doubting Thomas, and I do 100%, the sarcasm is not needed. You are more than welcome to call the local EPA office at 936-327-6820, Mr. Jay Barbee is the County Environmental Officer, to verify anything you like, he is the one that has gottent he state involved to do the clean up at no cost to me, has coordinated with Mr. Kenneth Hambrick,  Emergency Management director. The number to the Polk County Enterprise is 936-327-4357. The person that wrote the story is the Editor of the paper, Valerie Reddell, her exention is102. You can also contact Vicki Coker, ext 104, who has knwn me for 3 years thru our work withthe SPCA of Polk County. You can contact the SPCA of Polk County to get updates on what is goingon withthe dogs if I dont get on theboard first to tell you by calling 936-967-2287. Leave a message on the machine since they are only in the office on wed. They do pick up calls during the week tho after they get back from investigations and the like.

hodie, the green urine was explained to me by Poison control as being something that occurs after mercury exposure and the urine is concentrated, like first morning. Now it is just like it was 3 days old, dark and cloudy. I talked with the ER this evening and they suggested if I was concerned because of the kidney pain that I should make a return trip. They were supposed to do a 24 hour urine collection to begin with but they didnt know so they didnt do it. They also refused to draw blood the day after I spent the night at thehouse, the doc said they wouldnt do anything til the other bloodwork came back, even tho I explained to him that I had spent the night inthe house with the heater and ceiling fan on and slept on the couch which was right under the ceiling fan and directly next to where the mercury still was on the floor and about 3 ft from the heater, stupid me Iknow now.

My son was the one that handled it, from what I understand limited physical contact does not hold the dangers of vaproized mercury being inhaled. He has n ot had the severity of issues altho he had complained about headaches. He did not stay the night in the hose with me, It was late and since I was not going to send him to school the next day I sent him to his dads for the night because that is where he would have stayed the next day.

Something that really peeves me tho, All week, everytime I saw Mr. Barbee or spoke with him, he always asked me who I told about the incident, He knew I wanted to keep this out of the news, I am in a small town and I do not like people to know mybusiness. I kept telling him that few knew, only those that needed to. Ya'll arent local so I wasnt worried about that and I needed the info for the dogs and be damned what he thought. Well I guess I found out why he wanted to keep it hush hush, so that the local paper would get the scoop. How freakin moronic. It was Kenneth that was taking the pictures, I thought he was taking them for documentation that the house had in fact been entered, he was taking pics of the epa guys suiting up and in their yellow coveralls, taping duct tape around the leg openings and wrist opening as well as the faceplate on the helmet. They both knew I was adamant about keeping itout of the news :( The main reason I wanted to keep itout of the news is because of the impact it would have onmy son. The way this town in, ( pop 5400) He is going to hear about it for weeks at school, and get blamed. He doesnt need that, this child just lost everything that he has ever had, he has no security on where he will lay his head and his feelings of guilt are very strong. I have already talked with a counselor that will start counseling him monday, he has made statements that really scare me about his mental state. Mainly he blames himself for the losses and if it turns out that i will have bad health or whatever, that is a guilt he will carry the rest of his life. Everyone that we talk to makes sure to point out to him that thisis his fault. OMG can you imagine the mental anguish he is going thru?? Especially when we are standing there and the EPA guys are telling me what can occur after acute mercury poisoning? If I sneeze he jumps and asks meif I am ok, I rub my lower back because my kidneys hurt and he wants me to go to the ER> He did his best to talk me into going tonight instead of waiting until tomorrow. this is more thana ny 15 year old should have to deal with.

I am rambling again, I appreciate the offers of help, If you pm'd me and I havnt answered yet, I am not ignoring you, it is very difficult for me to accept help, I have always had to do everything on my own and it makes me feel like I am a failure to ask for or accept help, I should be able to do everything myself, that is the way I have always thought, I have always been very self relient. I cant be like that rightnow, I need to much help to be able to do it all myself altho I am trying to do as much as I possibly can without asking for help, its just the way I am.

Tomorrow  have to go to the shop to get goldie, I will scan the newspaper article in and post it on webshots or something so that ya'll can read it. Our local newspaper only posts twice a week and it only updates the news website once a week.

I do know of another way to confirm, go to our local message board, www.livingstonitown.com and click on message board and ask. I am sure others in the area have picked up the sunday paper already altho no one has posted about the spill yet.

I took a picture of the paper with the story, I dont have my photoshop on this laptop and I dont know how to use the program thats on it to resize it. If someone wants it I can send the full size that I have and maybe able to take a clearer picture so that you can read the story.

Mr. Steve, Unless Ms. Della is privy to facts that I am unaware of, There is nothing that she can say to contridict what I have stated on this forum. I have stated every step of the way exactly what was occuring and had occured. I can give names and address of the source of the mercury that my son got it from altho we are not sure where that person got it from, You are more than welcome to talk with whoever you want, no probs there, I have nothing to hide since I have not typed a single untruth. Please also speak with Deputy Sheriff Byron Lyons when you get a chance, he was also there every step of the way. I dare you to post anything that will refute the fact that I have been displaced from my home due to a mercury spill, that EPA has taken over control of my home, that my dogs are in the back yard in constant contamination, that it will be 2 weeks before the clean up crew can get in there to clean or that it will take 1 1/2 - 2 weeks to clean up thent hey will have to take another reading to determine whether or not they will have to demolish the home, that they will have to dig up the dirt in the back yard because of contamination, that everything I own is in my home and I am not allowed to touch anything, That I can do anything onmy property other than drop bags of food over the fence to feed the dogs. I really wish I would have had my camera with me yesterday when they suited up to enter my home. You can see my house in this picture, the one from the frontpage of the paper, you should also be able to read a portion of the story, if not I will be more than hapy to take multiple pictures of the entire story for your reading pleasure.

Therese FAULHABER

in case anyone would like to contact SO to make sure you have the right house. Be aware that another house was also contaminated, where the remaining mercury was stored, the original place my son got it from. It has also been taped off and quarentined. I do not know if they actually had a spill or if it was just stored there.
