I dont know - I think it is alot more noble to pick a dog with good structure and a long stock coat over a dog with crummy structure and a short coat. I see too many dogs with crummy structure in the showring as it is - the long coat is a much less serious fault in my mind that poor structure. And the long coat was not an original fault - I dont remember reading it as a fault in my copy of the 1924 translation of the Captains book - and correct me if I am wrong - but the long coat has only become a DQ in recent years. The UKC wont always award ribbons if they feel the dog isnt a ood representation of the breed - but I think you will also find that in the UKC the structural faults are a little more important than ones as trivial as the coat length. ~Cate

Ceph, you are totally correct there on everything that you said. I have seen in the UKC where there was only one dog in the ring for particular breeds and the judge refused to give it a ribbon even when it was the only dog in the ring! Said in her mind that the dog did not fit the standards of the breed and she did not feel right giving it a ribbon. I felt bad for the lady, but hey if that's how the judge feels, it's their right.

shepherd woman are you gonna show your Chaos against Nikita http://www.fleischerheim.com/images/NikitaSide_8_4_07.jpg For one Cindy, my long coat is not as long coated as that one you put up here. The one you put up here would definitly be disqualified from the show ring even in UKC. The coat is WAY too long! This is Chaos. And like I said before, YES he does have a undercoat! My groomer is amazed at how much undercoat he has. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k175/Schuggar/CCVS1-1.jpg

I would never dream of showing my longcoat gsd but I have been able to pay for my kids' college education by offering him for stud.

Is there a particular reason, CindyGSD, why you need to be so hostile to someone who wants to do something with their LC GSD? If they want to show it in an organization that allows it, more power to them. It's better than letting the dog rot by "keeping it at home" as you suggested. A LC can do just fine in obedience, agility, and schutzhund as a stock coat. Would I breed one? No. Would I be unneccesarily nasty to someone who wants to active in the breed with one? Hell no. And if you are who I think you might be, you shouldn't be throwing stones at anyone.

Cindy, No one from this board has asked me to breed my dog to theirs, so I have NO idea where you came up with that. Unless I missed something anyway, LOL. And thanks for the nice comment about Chaos. I think he looks pretty good too my self!

Whenever anyone sees my girl their first question is why I do not have her in the conformation ring. The answer is simply that she is a plush {she has hairy ears, the rest of her coat is beautiful) and I do not want to hear the whining "Oh Boo Hoo, That long coat just kicked my dog's ass all over the ring but she should be DQ'd for her coat." Thanks, but we'll stick to obedience, rally, and maybe this year agility and a try at flyball or airdog and leave the "beauty contests" for others. I look at the overangulated dogs winning in the conformation ring and just shake my head in pity of these poor things that can barely walk much less do any kind of work. A GSD should be first and foremost an athlete, THEN worry about how it looks. IMO Shepherd Woman, you GO for it!
