If you live in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, you might want to think about attending this dangerous dog conference in November. You can read all the details at: www.naiaonline.org/body/articles/archives/dangerousdogconfnov.htm Arguing over which lines are the best, titling, contracts, etc are moot points if the breed is banned in your community and make no mistake, that will happen if dog haters and insurance companies have it their way. The GSD is already considered to be one of the top 10 dogs most likely to bite according to bite records complied by the National Insitute of Health. I assume some of you have already been refused homeowners insurance because of your dogs and I'd expect that the more dogs you have, the more problems you'll have in the future. Also, most uninformed dog haters are scared silly of dogs trained in any sort of man sport. Having titled dogs is not going to help you.

thanks for the heads-up, blitzen. i am in the area, and am checking out the information.

You're welcome, Kioanes. Please let me know the outcome. I am very concerned about the effect breed specific legislation and breed banning could have on the future of the dog world. This is not someone else's problem.

I recall reading many warning about such pending action against the breed both locally and nationally. The insurance industry is spending $$$$ to force the breed out. I would have to ask "What is the organizations that are dedicated to protect the GSD doing to counteract the lobbying by the insurance companies?"

Good question, Elizabeth, I think most of the GSD efforts are sponsored by the GSDCA, not sure about any other organizations. It's not only GSD's, Malamutes, Pitties, Rotties, Sibes, and others are on the "hit list" and those breed people are working on it as well. My son has a Pittie, he had to really shop around for a homeowner's policy and is paying a premium price. I've not been asked, my insurance company is Nationwide, but I do know other companies ask and will refuse to renew or up the premium based on the breed(s) of dogs on the premises. I don't see it discussed much on the GSD lists I read, but I only look at 2 on a regular basis.

American Family just cancelled our homeowners insurance due to my GSD's. We offered to purchase an umbrella policy to cover the extra liability and they refused. They dont want anything to do with us. They will cover us until our current policy runs out next year. I have heard State Farm will insure us but have not researched this yet. The insurance companies only want the easy money. The people who really need insurance cant get it.

jbbrbx - i am insured with state farm, however my agent has some concerns about liability because people come here to look at/buy pups - hence a business. they do not do business policies. am checking with sportsmen's insurance... one of the questions on their form is whether 'protection' work is done on the premises. no protection work is done on my property, but i dont know if anwering the question with a 'yes' would cause rejection or higher rates. many years ago, our local SchH club purchased event insurance from them for our trials.

I just spoke with someone in the insurance business who is willing to help dog owners find homeowners insurance. If you can tell me your state of residence, I'll contact him and see what he comes up with and will post it to the list.

Try Allstate, might depend on the number of dogs and GSD's are on the "bad" list, it's that way with all agencies, we're in the top 10 everywhere. However, you might be OK if you refer to your dogs as "show dogs" and not something like Schutzhund or protection trained which might make them think "a dog that bites". Another idea, you might want to refer to them as Alsatians, Alsatian Shepherds, Alsatian Herding Dogs, Sheepdogs, you get the picture. Good luck.
