Dear Friends, I am curious that what the problem is to mate a male GSD at 15 or 16 months old. If we mate a male Gsd who is 15 or 16 months old, Is there any problem? Why SV says that "male GSD must mate at 24 monts old"? Is this rule related about SchH title? Thank you very much, Igor

Mating a dog at 15 or 16 months old is TOO young! Would you tell your children who are young teenagers( or less) to start and to have sex and bring home children? 15 to 16 months are still puppies. They need to be puppies and not parents yet. I dont think i need to explain much more.

AKC allows dogs to mate earlier than 2 years old. The age is posted on their website. There may be a problem USA registering a dog from such a mating even with the AKC pedigree according to the USA office. USA wants them 2 years old as stated on their website.

That's not much of an explanation. We're not talking about teenagers that need to hold hands and go to a high school dance before they do anything else....

I was talking about Brittany's response. Not Dog1's.

I dont think Igor is disputing the old saying "old enough to bleed-old enough to breed" issue. Hes simply wanting answers. The dog is indeed young and maybe not mature enough as to when those pups come due as to what to do,and the worst case scenario she may possibly eat them. Also you will want to OFA and that is done at 2 years of age here. Let her be a puppy first!

Brittany do you have to be so loud?

Thank you Kennyr, You understood me. Yes I just want to learn the answer. Igor

Most males are physically mature enough to produce puppies well under a year old...but just because they can "breed" and produce puppies doesn't mean they should be allowed to do so. At 15/16 mos of age a male has NOT proven himself worthy of breeding yet, the male is still developing structually as well as mentally. Before breeding with the male should be considered, the male should be trialed in SchH to prove a sound tempernment, shown and recieve a breed survey as well as a hip/elbow cert. In most areas, there are already quite a few males who have proven themselvs to be worthy of breeding, so why potentially waste a litter on a young/unproven/untitled male?
