I have a 6 month old pup very big boned weighs 80 pounds . Is a awsome pup but ears are not up. Glued ears on advice fome vet and giving calcium supplements. After glue comes undone ears stand great for a couple days and go back down. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Try some raw meaty bones for the pup to chew on, will help strengthen and exercise those jaw muscles, which in turn will help pop the ears up. 6 mos old and 80lbs is pretty scary, I hope he is not over weight. What is the pups pedigree? Some lines are known for soft ears, some will take time to stand etc. Good Luck!

Pedigree should not superceed the breed standard. That sounds like a huge dog, like 25lbs overweight or so. You should not expect the ears to stand on a dog of such substance, at that young age. The calcium and meaty bones or hard rubber chew toy, should aid in standing the ears up. There is a direct corolation between jaw muscles and the ears standing. Bottom line, the ears are not going to stand up when you want them to stand up, but rather when the dogs body stands them up. I have gone 8 months before the ears were standing like a "number 1".

80lbs @ 6 months is to heavy,I don't care how big boned he is,watch it's food intake continue with the calicum supplements,I'm not sure if taping the ears are doing any good but I do not think it is going to hurt. You have a full grown shepherd in a 6 month olds body.I think being that big is only going to create problems down the road for you. What kind of food are you using?

This is a BIG puppy -- too big for it's age !! This size, combined with the possibility of weak ears in the line (as the schaferhund suggests) is setting you up for big trouble. Chewing stuff like whole neck bones is good excercise as stated, but even in a big (boned) male puppy -- if his ears are staying erect at 5 months I'd be very very worried. You need a an excpert breeder to determine what taping method you need most -- vets are not usually that person - but you need to do something. and BTW: "an awesome pedigree with several champions does not make for a good strong ear guarantee !!

I tell folks that buy my dogs, to let the dog be an adolecent. He should be skinny and lanky now. Awkward as the day is long. At 18 months-2 years the dog will come in to his own and fill out with that muscular body. At 6 months old, the dog should not have the appearance of a grown dog. Quite probably if he were not so big, his ears would be standing already. Like Charlie Ivory said, you only set yourself up for problems down the road, with too much weight. You can actually induce displastic conditions in a dog that was genetically free of hip dysplasia at birth, by making him carry around that weight before his bones/sockets/muscles are fully developed.

ocpd426 (what a difficult name). I have a couple of questions for. First of all I would like to know how high your puppy is, as this also affect the weight. Rapid growth can affect the ears in periods. Are you able to describe the tickness of your dogs ears? Then I would like to know where you are from, and from that information I or someone else may be able to set you in contact with someone that can help you with a practical and professional solution. Best wishes.

When gluing ears, you need to keep up the gluing for a while. Stop gluing and they will fall down after 1-2 days. We kept on gluing for about 2 months. Because it will fall out several times. And after about two months the ears are correct. Be patient!! If you give up now, there is a chance the ears will never be correct. If you keep up the "good work" the ears will be better and better as the time goes. Then there is also the question about To glue or Not to glue!! And I agree with the others.... Keep the weight down, or else you will destroy ligaments and bones on this puppy. Maybe he looks grown now, but it's not worth it in the long run. Ant not healthy for him eighter! *crossing fingers* **Jessie**
