Me too, Mi GSD! Now I know why the pup was screaming so shrilly when the mom was 'tending' it!

Or maybe there was something wrong with it, and the bitch instinctively knew that?

<Or maybe there was something wrong with it, and the bitch instinctively knew that?>

Sunsilver, good question.

I peaked at the website briefly and heard a distressed puppy.  Mom's instict is to stop the distressed noise of a pup.  I'm sure her instinct to comfort the puppy and the pup not responding must have drove her out of her mind.  My own bitch here in the office with me was upset to hear the pup as well.  This was not a normal puppy cry.  This was a dying puppy sound.  Mother nature is not always pretty.  It's TRAGIC this happened.  My condolences to the bitch owner and all who watched this horror show.  Noone needs to see/hear this kind of thing.

I did take a peek before signing off and I noticed mom seemed a little stressed and nervous about the pup but that's not uncommon in a maiden bitch.  Usually they'll settle down to their job.  If she was a maiden bitch, my butt would of been glued into that whelping room.

I did hear the puppy in distress, but it was impossible to tell if it was distressed because it was dying, or because the mother was being too rough with it.  There WERE long periods when everything seemed calm, then the mother would get up, and that's when I'd hear the puppy start to cry. I noticed it also cried when she seemed to be licking it or tending it, and I was starting to wonder just what was going on. Then, fatique hit me big time, and I had to go to bed, as I was dozing off at the computer.

What a horror show...

Bochaka and everyone else,

This female was in obvious distress for quite a long time.  She was leaping in and out of the whelping box over the sides, climbing the walls, scratching frantically at the floor and everywhere else and BARKING/MOANING for help.  If you Bochaka, just sat by and watched that, I have no good thoughts for you whatsoever.

Molly, this wasn't a bad female or a bad mother (she was great with her live pup before she got in trouble), she was a female who needed a bit of help and reassurance from her owner.  Simply removing the live pup while she was attempting to have the next one would have saved that puppy.  She didn't mean to kill it, it was a totally stressed bitch who had a stuck puppy and NO HELP that caused this tragic and horrific accident to happen.  She was looking for her live pup for some time after it was gone and I don't think she even realized what she'd done.  Not finding her live pup stressed her further and she really needed someone there with her.  She looked like she was still big (had more pups in there) after the tragedy happened and I don't think I believe there were no more pups to be born.  I'd like to see a livecam of poor Chaka today to know she made it ok.  I have my doubts you even took her to the vet.  THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED and if you were watching and let it happen the way it did....I have no words for you!

I'm usually a very understanding person and would somewhat have been forgiving had you fallen asleep after being up for more than 24 hours or something.  But if you were awake and just watched all of that and did nothing....what a shame on you as it could easily have been prevented.

She's not a maiden bitch.  She whelped a litter of three Feb. 29, 2008 as seen on the news page of the website here www.bochaka.com/pages/news.html

There's a video of those puppies and the bitch with them here www.bochaka.com/litters/G4_20080326022552.wmv

The puppy was fine and nursing when I first looked at the webcam, making normal happy puppy noises.  It became distressed AFTER the dam was spinning around in the box (maybe she stepped on it) and wasn't tending to it for long periods as she was trying to get the next pup whelped.  The pup was crying and screaming towards the end, but it was FINE before the bitch had trouble delivering her next pup.   I still say this was something that could have been prevented if the owner had been present to assist her.  That pup was making typical happy, nursing puppy sounds before this TRAGEDY.  The dam was tending to it perfectly beforehand.  Not a bad mama, a bad owner!   Sorry to say this, but this was NOT a sick pup and "nature's way" at all.

If that's what you witnessed on video then I have to agree.  (editted to add - I've read your posts for a long time and I have a lot of respect for your opinion.)  I didn't see it but I wasn't on until after the births.

I was responding to a post earlier about her possibly being a maiden bitch.

Let's hope that it goes better and he or she is more in attendance for the other bitch also due.

honestly i am lost for words..so sad that mans best friend was left to deal with that alone. god i stay awake and in the room and am with my dog every step of the way. i am her pack in fact i am all she has so i will be with her till the day she dies

god the last litter me and my husband stayed up in 12-24 hour shifts starting 3 days prior to due date until the pups were 4 weeks old. my bed was next to the whelping box...and guess what we didn't lose a single pup.

it just goes to show you can never be too careful.

so sad.

"I do not like to directly intervene in the whelping process unless I feel the bitch is in an unusual level of distress for this type of event , I noted that anytime i went into her she became  even more hyped up and I felt that my continued direct presence ,presented a risk to the live pup "

This attitude shows a great lack of care, most bitches appear to like "help" and a little care can prevent so many problems.  The fact that your presence hyped the bitch is extremely worrying and doesnt show a good relationship.  I have known bitches who are happy in their surrounding and extremely comfortable with their owners allowing total strangers into the whelping area.  I would also be interested in knowing how long before whelping did you move her into this area?
