Can we use Beta-Carotene in the diet to enhance the pigment? Has anyone tried this with positive results? Spirulina which is widley available across retail stores is a likely source.Does it also enhance the black color too or just the tan color?

be careful with beta-carotene, dogs can convert it into vitamin a, which is a fat-soluable vitamin & does not exit the body. http://www.nuvetonline.com/ingredients/beta_carotene.htm

Lioness9918, My understanding of the article is that Beta carotene supplementation is less likely to cause toxicity than Vitamin A supplementation. Vitamin A is fat soluble and can build up in the body's lipid stores.Did I get it right?

Besides this it says -if your dog is not indulging in tobacco or alcohol, beta carotene supplementation should greatly benefit them. :-)

There is a product called Olewo that can be used to help 'enhance' the tan/reddish color of the GSD. http://www.olewo.de/ http://www.naturmix.com/pages/products/olewo.html http://www.wellpet.com/olewo.htm Dogs cannot completely digest big pieces of carrots (you will find pieces in ther waste), so this product is actually better to use.

I've used this product "olewo" and it does work. My dogs love it and there is a differance! Try it!

How long does it take to see the result..

I noticed a difference in my friends dogs after about a week.

Alexis, Iv visited their website, does this work with older dogs to or just with puppies?

by Alexis on 05 December 2004 - 22:12

Hello Wizard, My friends dogs are all adult dogs, and I was able to tell a difference in the richness of the tan/reddish color while they were on the Owelo. I'm not sure about puppies as their color seems to change as they grow and as their coat changes. Best wishes, Alexis
