Market Watch has just reported that Conseco may be in trouble. It has exposure to AIG, Lehman and WAMU.

www.marketwatch.com/news/story/conseco-shares-slump-40-exposure/story.aspx

The whole problem right now is that no one really knows the extent of exposure that exists with the different corporations. We could be looking at the unravelling of large parts of the US financial system.

I am waiting to see how long it will take before the media focuses on one of the root causes of the crisis we face which was the repeal of the Glass-Steagal Act. The main author of the Act's repeal was Phil Gramm - McCain's economic advisor. The repeal allowed the heavy leveraging which has been responsible for the collapse of Bear Stearns, Lehman, Merrill Lynch and AIG.

What is stunning is that these investment banks survived the Great Depression but were undone as a result of this crisis.

Now as a result of the globalization of the world economies, the downside is potentially cataclysmic. I had invested a small portion of my portfolio in gold several years ago - not the result of foresight as much as the normal diversification of my assets. I am glad that I did.

I believe that what is being addressed in this thread is true and tv and tv "news" are bad for our minds; some people I know and love, and who have way above adverage intelligence, have gotten caught up in it's snare; it heartbreaking. IMO the biggest obstacle to opening up and seeing reality (instead of simply buying into the one the media posits) is seeing the truth makes you feel completely helpless and hopeless.  I'm not very connected into economics and politic - too long and involved to explain why - but a few years back I happened upon a website which I thought gave advise that was very wise and proactive.  http://solari.com/

I think the Solari site addresses this obstacle of helplessness and hopelessness by laying out a way to get involved that not only helps yourself it also effecting a much needed socio-economic-political change. it shows you how to disengage as well as how to truly "vote with your dollars" while protecting your financial future. I have no idea what you guys might think about this but would sure be interested in your opinions. I hate the future we're leaving for our kids, what a mess and would like to help change it.

Justcurious, I agree with your view that the Solari website is excellent.  It was started by Catherine Austin Fitts, who used to be asst. Secretary of HUD.  She has proven herself to be a great American hero, worthy of our respect. She exposed all the financial theft and asset stripping by intel in HUD over 10 years ago, and predicted most of the asset stripping by intel which occurred in Fanny Mae, Freddie Mac, making them insolvent.

justcurious, thanks for sharing that site. I willl spend more time reviewing it over the next couple of days.

It is difficult not to be concerned about what is happening before our very eyes.

Gold prices jumped $90 today - the biggest one day gain ever.

3 month treasury bills essentially yield nothing - just 3 basis points or .03%. Essentially the movement into t-bills is so huge as being one of the few safe places to park one's money that there is almost no return.

A major money-market fund has frozen any withdrawals for a week and will only pay 97c in the dollar when they do start allowing withdrawals. This has never ever happened before - there was always boiler-plate language that money market funds may not pay back the full capital invested but who would have believed that this could actually happen.

blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2008/09/one-big-money-m.html

I am not trying to be overly pessimistic but there is no point in ignoring what is happening. The good news is that as long as we don't have a full scale unravelling, there will be some great investment opportunities for those with the liquidity to utilize it.

My background is finance. I am now retired but I was a senior executive in a major NYSE company which was sold years ago.

I don't envy the next person who is the POTUS. He will have inherited the biggest mess in just about every respect.

I agree with what everyone said. This is no new news to me.We are headed for a depression people...and voting wont change anything. But do vote.Actually gold is meaningless..has no value. What will have value is what you have for trade in order to survive.I am talking the basic necessities. The USA was taken over many moons ago.I am hopeful that each of you own outright your land and have good shelter.Good old green span..errr! What is now happening has always been planned. If you have children..pull them away from the brainwashing media and teach them. The tagging is already up in tracking what is said over the net..down to where you search. It is not exact control as of yet..But be aware.Remember your freedom of expression. The folks in Government cant wear a t-shirt to say what they think..The ones that want to make a difference are just bound...So much fear!Well they should be...How many needless persay accidents happened to those that spoke out!!!It is up to the American people to speak out now...Print a tee with the info you gave Ugly.I will buy one and wear the hell out of it.Lets make this happen...!!!What say the rest in freedom of speech and wearing it?You are right in a way Brent that the dogs dont matter.I know you are not one of these people looking at medals for their dogs..hmmm the medals for the owner/breeder.Saving//recollecting what was once the total shepherd will never happen.People can talk all day about doing it.They live in a dream world. The majority that compete and rely upon the kick back in monies...will go under. The majority that breed will go under.PETA will soon be at every doorstep. But I do know this..and a bit more. There is a select few historical ones that saw this coming.I mean FEW!!! and they have prepared.   Direct question to everyone. What about the "Beast of Belgium"??..do some research.

THE RICH GET RICHER AND THE POOR GET POORER  .  THE PEOPLE ARE PASSED FROM GRADE SCHOOL TO GRADUATION  UNABLE TO READ  ONE SHOULD ASK WHY AND HOW MANY? LOOK AT HISTORY AND YOU WILL SEE HOW MANY MEN WE SENT TO VIETNAM TO DIE . IT WAS THE YOUTH   WHO WERE TAKING A STAND AGAINST THE GOV .AND WANTED CHANGE THAT WERE SENT TO DIE AND WE LOST THE WAR AND OUR REAL  YOUTH ,THEY.  WOULD BE IN TOP GOV. ROLES NOW .CHANGE WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERANT IF SO MANY YOUNG DID NOT DIE WAY BACK THEN I SUPORT OUR TROOPS THEN AND NOW BUT NOT OUR GOVERMENT, WE THE PEOPLE NEED TO STAND UP AND SUPPORT THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE.

Rainhouse, good post.  I am surprised you know about the Detroux crimes which go to the highest level of European and American Gov't and Elites.  Very few in the USA know about this.  Dutroux was exposed in Belgium and thousand of citizens took to the streets to protest this, with only local coverage and a complete coverup of the guilty high officials was instituted and remains to this day.  Top politicians, police and judges were involved in many countries, especially mil officials from Brussels (read between the lines here, connect the dots--what is in brussels?).  This is the most sinister occult related elite deviance ever exposed and it is worldwide.  It is almost too terrible to fathom and involves the fine art of human comprimise, blackmail, payoffs, murder, snuff films, 100% pedophilia.  It is too terrible for 99% of the citizens to be able to fathom it or believe it is true.  However it is well documented on the internet and in the European press.  Unfortunately, this is the stuff that runs business and gov't.
