Blitzen, maybe you're right about the price.  Maybe the so called "credit crunch" might help?

justcurious, Most puppies are sold to Joe Public... on here... it's largely the converted or those willing to listen/learn.

Uber Land, you deserve a medal.  Your posting has restored my faith, I only wish there were more breeders with your integrity, to start again from scratch because you discovered possible health problems connected to your import bitch.

I have heard of a few breeders in other breeds doing this when health problems cropped up in their breeding.  They went on to great things & I hope you do to, you deserve it.

As for the steroids, I would not have thought of it, but my partner who works in the medical profession reminded me that if you stop taking steroids suddenly it can cause serious problems including heart attacks.  So maybe that explains these early unexplained deaths.  Steroids would be easy to obtain but it might be illegal to give them to a dog unless you are a vet I would think.

A man in our park rescued a young Basset years ago & he told me how it had come in to rescue via it's breeders who had mis-treated it.  He said they gave it steroids & that it was common to do so in the pups of the breed to give them the huge bulk & knuckles, etc.  Don't know if that's true though.
