Kalibeck

by Kalibeck on 16 October 2008 - 03:10

Little Ansgar is not doing so well this evening. Even Carl had to admit she took nothing by mouth. She is scheduled to go back to the vets tomorrow. I'm thinking about taking her to Penn State's vet hospital in Kennett Square, if my vet can't figure out a diagnosis. Any thoughts? jh

Well, puppy was deliriously happy to see me home from work last night, & took a little yogurt, a little broth, & 1/4 ginger cookie. We kept her up & with us for about 2 hours, she was happy. This morning she is again, very happy, playful....but her crate had vomitus in it, what she consumed the night before. Carl, however, swears she moved her bowels when she went out; says she passed a medium brown hard stool, he wouldn't let me see it, tho'...I think he's just trying to keep me from freaking out- I made the mistake of telling him that if she doesn't poop, she'll probably need surgery, so his solution is to say she pooped. I'm taking her back to the vets anyway for another work-up & more fluids, she's not taking anything again this morning. Her belly is still soft, she doesn't look bad; no staring coat or eyes, she acts hungry, sniffing & licking at what is offered to her, then she flattens her ears back, looks away, & then puts her head down & takes a couple steps away. She is playful, chews her toys, my foot, whatever she can grab............what the heck is going on here? I'm baffled, worried......stumped! jackie harris

So sorry for you Jackie, it's heart rending.

What about some scrambled eggs... no milk (or poss' skimmed) to try to tempt her?

Jackie, is there any chance you could leave her a couple days at the vet?  That would remove any wonder about how and what she is eating, drinking, pooping while you're at work.  Good thoughts still coming your way from here.

I am serious about taking her to Penn State if we can't come up with a definate diagnosis....my vet doesn't like to keep animals overnight if she can help it, because they are left alone. I have given Carl instructions to let me care for her, & I have off work today. He's trying to help, but to him it's more important that I'm happy. He doesn't get that if she poops, I want to know how much, what color, what did it smell like, was it bloody, did she strain, how firm, etc, etc????? I'm encouraged that she seems happy & playful.......worried that she doesn't even want to drink. If she were obstructed, her belly would be taut or at least firm, & most likely a little tender..........she has none of that, absolutely soft & she is completely unconcerned with palpation....thanks for the prayers & good thoughts, I'll keep you posted....jh

I say take the pup to the vet and a 2x4 to the husband. Does he seriously not understand the gravity of the situation?

The vet x-rayed her again, she now shows a paralytic ileus, her temp is up, no bowel sounds...going to start iv fluids, do ultrasound of abdomen, & scope her if needed....exp. lap if indicated.........prayers really needed now, thanks.   And 4pack, he cried, too, at the vets just now....the vet said..."I know, you want her to be better, so you say what you think will make it so..."    He's a good man, he just doesn't get it.

I trust Sherry, I thank God she was there today......now we wait. jackie harris
