Morning update--just spoke with the surgeon--Ansgar is bright eyed, temp normal, pulses good, wound doing well,             + bowel sounds. She will not take any of the food they are offering her there, however, so they would like to keep her another day, to be sure that everything is OK. I wish I could see her, but the doc feels that exciting her would be detrimental, so I will wait patiently....hopefully tomorrow she will come home. And having 1 more day of veterinary care can only be good. My loving husband means well, but is somewhat clueless. He raised 3 kids to be doctors, & was raised on a farm, he feels that makes him an expert about almost everything...& he's usually correct. But he still lives in a world where 'the dog' lives in a dog house out in the yard, & if 'it' gets sick, 'it' gets PTS, & that's that. But I am making progress with him, our dogs live in the house with us, & he cried over Ansgar, when he thought she was going to die, & he was right there yesterday with his checkbook open to help pay for her vet bill, to the tune of $2400.00, ( & I thought $400.00 was bad! ), something his daughter said he would never have done 10 years ago. And I think that reading him the opinions of this board have helped to change his attitude, so thank you for that, as well. Even an old dog can learn new tricks!

I would like to express my continued thanks to all of her well wishers; you have no idea how much your kind words & wishes have meant to us. God Bless you! jackie harris

Intussusceptions in puppies are generally the result of diarrhea. The blockage is a result of the bowel telescoping into itself, not the the cause. In spite of the "blockage" most will still pass watery and bloody diarrhea and many will also vomit.   It is serious at any age, but much more so in very young puppies who almost never survive the ordeal. The good news here is this puppy is older, doing well and the intestines were still "alive" and didn't require any repair.  I lost a very promising 10 week old to the same problem and since then I get very paranoid when I have a dog with diarrhea that lasts more than a few days regardless of the dog's age.

Interestingly enough, Ansgar did not have diarrhea preceeding her difficulties. She, in fact, had a couple really firm stools just prior to her first episode of vomiting. I initially thought that she was constipated, then that she had ingested a foreign body. The surgeon said that intussesceptions are frequently caused by parasites, bacterial infections(hence the diarrhea you mentioned), or ingesting toxins or foreign bodies. He found nothing in Ansgar to have caused it, which really worries me, because spontaneous intussusceptions are more likely to re-occur. He stapled her bowel at intervals to the lining of her perineum to hopefully prevent re-occurence, but I will have to be very watchful of her for the rest of her life. And she can no longer be considered for breeding potential. Now I know why people have such a hard time with that...all along she was the pup who looked so perfect to me, the one pup I was planning a future litter from, if everything else panned out. Now I have to get my head around the fact that all just went up in smoke. I just thank God we'll still have her pretty face around to enjoy, & if we're careful, she'll have a happy, normal life. jackie harris

Kalibeck,

If she was straining to make a BM that is often mistaken for constipation!  Straining as if constipated usually, almost always, indicates diahrrea (sp?) and an iritated bowel.  Glad your girl is doing well now!

I picked my girl up from the surgery center, today, man, was she happy to see me! She came home, & ate some chicken & rice, took her meds & settled down for a nap, all worn out already. Still hasn't moved her bowels....the surgeon says this is not yet cause for alarm....highly recommend Northeast Veterinary Surgical Services in Wilkes-Barre, Pa; very clean, compassionate, knowledgable care. Got her right in & taken care, had tissues for weepy me, & my little girl looks good.  Vicki, she wasn't straining at all, just hasn't pooped since Saturday, 10/11/08---I mean nothing! zip! nada!, diddly!, zilch! ; I watch my dogs like a hawk, I can tell you amount, color, consistancy, & odor of their last 5 or 6 BMs.....it's a nurse thing! jackie harris

Poor little Ansgar, all shaved & stapled.....now we need to pray for poop....she's eating, but that's it. We need to see that it goes through, & is not just sitting in there! I'm still praying......jh
