I find it pretty peculiar that so many people are amazed someone would vote for the McCain/Palin ticket. They become downright incredulous that one is not swayed by the lovely rhetoric of Obama's effervescent vision. Even in the light of a landslide in their favor, a single dissenting opinion is subject to a serious scoffing at. That being said, what do you say that the big "O" is spelt OPRAH, because she set the golden path of endorsement for the great "person-of-color" hope, "O", spelt OBAMA.

So, wouldn't you say she's just about the most powerful person in the US? Would Obama  be a nothing, if not for being a bona fide "Oprah's pick"!

I do not intend this to be a slap at the originator of this post-these are just my thoughts.

I know that so many people (perhaps more women than men-can't say.)  are absolutely enamoured with Oprah Winfrey and her rotund celibrity. Me? I cannot be. She uses her immense television draw to futher her personal views and ideas to the level of demagogue status.Oprah thrives on the exploitation of personal drama-for those who seem to not get enough exposure to the debilitating behaviours in the lives of other people so they can compare the failures of these people to themselves. Perhaps.

I have never understood her appeal to people, for although she is of common but decent upbringing (I knew who she was thirty years ago) from that she has beome an obese, arrogant, loud, and self-aggrandizing celebrity of massive wealth and influence. For those so enamoured with her; are those personal qualities or achievements for that one should strive? Of course I could agree on the weath-no argument there. Has Oprah Winfrey achieved a happy ending for some of her daily drama victims or improved lives here or abroad? One would think that surely she has.......someone, somewhere.

Forgive me if I cannot buy into the things that many of my fellow Americans find entertaining and endearing-for there are many things I do not, and will perhaps never understand. I think of myself as having an open mind, but I am just like everyone else there is the infallable fact that I am self-limiting there. I have never taken any entertainment celebrity seriously about  any issue/subject they professed or any topic they discussed.

But I willl close this by saying that Oprah Winfrey is no doubt a success in her endeavours-although I fail to undertand what she really does. But, perhaps that is just my issue.

Best Regards,

Bob-O

Well said, Bob.  The truth of the matter is I know a lot of Obama supporters and not one decided to support Obama because of  anything Oprah said or did.  Most people I know began to notice Obama during his speech at the 2004 DNC, and have been watching him ever since.   Really, to suggest he owes his popularity to Oprah kind of trivializes him and his supporters.

Except, that she, "Oprah",  did pick him, way back when, and we still don't know exactly what he has done to deserve this kind of faith, the kind that will lead the flock out of the wilderness and set the world right. Where's the proof? Not much, but there is plenty of clout.

...and the stock market knows of the "O" effect, the book publishers do to, to suggest she does not hold sway to middle america would seem to ignore a powerful force indeed. The H. Stern video exemplifies my point, nicely. They know not what he stands for but that Oprah has stood up for him.

Hmmmmm.....

McCain has had like $85 million this election to spend while Barack Obama has had over $600 million. Isn’t that unfair? Shouldn’t Obama be spreading the wealth around? I want my McCain and Palin variety half-hour!

I don't listen to the so called famous people, my husband and myself watch the debates and everything else these two canidates do, read up on them and we make our decision based on that, not what Oprah or any of the like thinks.

As you said, no proof, but lot's of speculation.  Actually, I have no clue what you mean when you say she picked him "way back when" or why you think it's significant.  If you want to know why Oprah is backing Obama, why not check out her website?

by beetree on 31 October 2008 - 01:10

Yes, you do, have a clue. It is the fact that people don't think for themselves, and look for endorsements to bolster their views. Advertisers/PR  make use of this fact all the time. I never asked why "O" was backing him. I just point out the popularity of voting for the "winner" without knowing what the heck he has actually accomplished, to give him the amazing credibility bestowed upon him. (Just the kind of ACORN registrants to be looking for.)

What did that?

I say "O". What say you? His Harvard degree? Good golly and gosh, is he not the Senator from Illinois, why what a coincidence, Oprah, is CHICAGO.
