Can we have a thread on what defines a sable as "black sable", "red sable", "grey sable", etc.

I have been under the impression that the undercoat determined the type of sable the dog was defined as.

I would call this girl "grey sable"

I would call this boy "red sable".

Is this a black sable?  HIs undercoat is generally very dark.

Any photos of what defines the different types of sables would be greatly appreciated and it is just for my learning experience only.

Thanks

Puppy looks black/tan.  Does the back hair have base color with black tips?

I think to BE sable by defination, you have to have black tipped hair, so that wouldn't mean 'black sable' to me.

I will visit www.arlett.de to read more.

Thanks.

The three dogs at the top of the post are sables (dark sable not black sable),the dogs below apart from the puppy are bi-colours the pup looks a normal black and gold.

A sable is a sable either light sable or right through to very dark sable.Sables nearly always start life as lighter than their adult colour, black and gold/tan start off very dark and get lighter in colour at maturity. The inheritance for colour is different in a sable from a black and gold, you cannot breed a sable from two black and gold parents.

Hope this helps a little
