I have a friend who asked me to post this for him.He has a 2yr old male that is not interested in breeding at all.He imported him with a Sch. title, but the breeder told him that the dog had never been bred since he didn't get titled until recently. He has had the male with two females that were in heat and the dog was not interested in either, just a few sniffs and that was it.This is a dog with very high drives and both of the females have been bred before. He says he has tried to encourage the dog-brought them inside, tried it outside and gets no interest from the male. Any suggestions?

Your friend needs to find a vet that specializes in reproduction. Several things could cause this and some of them are treatable.

I have a male import from Germany that will only show interest when the female is ready to be bred. When my female was in heat the first time, he would lay around and the female would hump his head as he laid there, head on the ground in a boring fashion. I was livid. I called Germany wanting an explination. My mentor said it was not time yet. I responded, the book says day 13 and it is day 13 and he is not interested. My mentor laughed and said it is not time. On day 15, out of the clear blue, the male got up out of his bored position, snatched the Dam by her hind legs and went at it. I was awe struck at his abrupt change. The next day I put them together and BAM, once again he took care of business. The 17th day he layed his head back down on the ground and showed no interest. That female always stands for mating at day 15 and 16 and it was amazing to watch that male for two different matings, exibited the exact same behavior. Others have brought females by and he showed no interest, they were impatient and said they no longer wanted to use him, but when the smell indicated the right time, he is always on time. I told that long story to say this, just because the female is in heat does not mean he will not stand and deliver. If you go through a COMPLETE cycle and he shows no interest, then you have a problem. If she has not reached the end of that season yet, I say be patient and give it a chance. That is not good advice if you really want to breed the female this season and you miss a possible breeding, with another, while waiting on this male. If he is healty and intact, I say, give it shot, have patient. You may not have a problem, you may have a darn good stud dog!

I had one male that would not breed in front of anyone. I had to put up cameras to make sure that he bred the bitch and nothing bad happend, fight ect...he was shy. I also had a male that did what you were saying yours is doing, and we went ahead and did the AI on the first day that she was ready, then by day two he was busy himself....maybe he needs help??

ginagsds- a friend of mine also imported a dog had the same problem they tried everything just short, of doing the job himself LOL, this dog died 3 mnths later, of a absorption problem, not saying this is in your case the problem, the other is I have heard they use some dogs as TEST dog so he can tell the owner when a bitch is ready, he never gets to do a mating, just jumps on/ off problem is dog gets conditioned to react but not follow thru, perhaps this could have been a TEST dog?? Big problem if he is bought to stud try let him run with bitch who is closer to being ready if not ready some males will not mate unless the bitch is absolutley ready...Nature's way?

I have to say that I didn't keep the one with the shy issue...he began to get aggressive with me, anytime that a female was in and then just aggressive with me all the time, when he growled at my son, I sent him back to the breeder... The other male is great, but I also raised him and we have no breeding issues now.. Sugarfoot....I agree not really into people watching me when I making nice...lol
