Mystere

by Mystere on 21 February 2009 - 17:02

Jenn, I never alluded to your experience, first of all. Now that you have recounted it, all I can say is that what you experienceds is hardly the norm. I would have RUN from those idiots, too. Frankly, I know of no clubs in that "situation." Do I know of individuals who's training methods I consider cruel, stupid and abusive? Yes. Are there individuals whose training is simply NOT my cup of tea, whether it would actually be abusive, or verging on it (IMO)? Yes. Do I train with any such? Not at present, but I have in the past and probably will again. I don't have an issue with different ttraining methods....unless it is actually abusive. And, if I truly were to be present with training I felt was TRULY AND UNEQUIVOCALLY abusive and abusive enough to warrant prosecution in Washington State where animal cruelty is a felony, I would be on my cell to the cops.

Thanks, Rezkat & Mystere... I've only ever used a check on one dog, the others have all been on a half check.  I will never use an e collar.  The pinch collars look severe, but I can appreciate that one go with that is probably kinder and easier than several goes with a full check.

Jenni, are you serious?

by Jenni78 on 21 February 2009 - 17:02

Misbeeb, yes, I'm serious.

I made a scene anyway, before I left. The problem was that the people doing it were out of state residents, just visiting for a trial. They happen to be a very respected kennel, which always makes things sticky b/c you have people w/glowing reviews making it a "he said she said" situation. Animal abuse complaints are not taken seriously enough that the cops would've come right then, although had I been thinking clearly, I would've made up some other reason to get them there. I also didn't want my friend, who simply owns the property, to be involved b/c he would never do anything like that.

I told them what I thought of them in no uncertain terms, and at least they were distracted enough to leave the dog alone.

So, Mystere, when I heard about Ignes, and was told via PM that it was a case like this, I said it may have been justified if this is how he was treated...I made no mention of "all" "sport people".

E collars also have their place, but not used as Jenni had mentioned.

At our club, the E collars are used on a low stimulation, again a tool in your box.

I have the pleasure of getting to train with a great group of people that I trust.   Also get to go see a couple of personal trainers as well, who are wonderful.   Whom I also trust....

MISSBEEB, I would not doubt that Jenn is serious. I have seen a couple of clubs that were nearly that bad. However, none were FR clubs. In my area, the Ringers *generally* tend to use milder training methods than the schutzhund trainers. But, when they go beyond those methods, some of them seem to go waaaaaaay overboard in the other direction. That being said, there are individuals who are skilled enough and experienced enough to use multiple e-collars skillfully, efficaciously and non-abusively. I don't personally know a one of them, but they are out there. :-)

No video, but here are three recent still shots

Venoch @ 14 months

Venoch again

Venuam @ 14months

Would be glad to get video, but I am lucky enough to get some photos. BTW all helper work to date is by me, Venuam is still in bitework development, Venoch is ready to advance, plan to do so after tax season, when I can travel.

Best wishes,

Jerry

Thanks, Rezkat... if I do take up Sch, I may be happy to use a pinch collar but I will never use an e collar.  I'm glad that you have a great club with good guys!  I hope I can find something similar.

Jenni, I got out of obedience for a similar reason... seeing well respected (big winners) people stamp, hard on the paws of their dogs, to get a sharper left hand turn etc.  Once, I physically stopped a woman from beating the crap out of her dog, behind the secretary's tent... she'd expected to win the class and the scent test went belly up.  Working Trials was, thankfully, very different.

Mystere, is it just lazy training?  What's an FR club and what's a Ringer, please.

Jenni78

by Jenni78 on 21 February 2009 - 17:02

Politics comes into play like it does in everything else. People turn a blind eye to things they know are wrong b/c of an ulterior motive...or simply not wanting to stand up in a crowd.

Sometimes I don't know which is worse...the small clubs or the big name ones w/big name dogs and reputations to uphold, come hell or highwater. Sad. These dogs are very frustrated, often times.

Missbeeb, By "check," do you mean what we call a choke collar? Two metal rings, one end of which slides through the opposing ring for a correction? (Probably didn't describe that too well. Sorry) See? This is an example why I contend that Harry Potter books should contain a glossary. :-) Who knew a "jumper" was a sweater? Or, knew treacle was just pecan pie without the pecans?:-)
