No, I didn't.  But I did take the opportunity to read about the shilohs.  I had not known anything about them until I came to this site   It seems a shame that what may have been a good idea to develop a new breed for folks that are so inclined, turned into what appears to me a truly megalomanic nightmare.

That being said - I haven't actually seen any shiloh lovers bash GSDs, but I have seen the GSD owners bash just about everything, LOL!

The overall bigotry I've seen on these threads gives me an understanding of the psychological rationale as to why someone would want to try and trick the folks here.  Obviously, it didn't work - but I do understand the sentiment behind it.

Luvdemdogs,

I can only speak for myself.  I am all for the GSD!!!  LOVE 'EM !  I also think that there is a standard, as there is for any breed!
If you don't adheer to the standard then anyone can make the breed anything they want.  How do you think that any breed got started?  Your opinions are, just that, your opinions.  Because, the standard is the standard and the GSD breeders and people that love the breed and want to see it thrive do what  they can to contribute to the breed rather than take 3 steps back.
Luvdemdogs, If you really love the breed then you would look at the BIG picture, Not just what you like and think should be admissable (sp?)

The "breed standards" evolve over time and often do not benefit the breed.  The problem I have is the fact that this occurs right now, changing the standard and seemingly without a thought or, at least any forethought.   It seems logical to me to put our collective minds as purebred dog owners together to aknowledge that fact.  Because if that is so, and it is, therefore if a purebred animal has traits that are slightly different than the current breed standard is a model of good health, structure and temperament - that is, slightly larger or smaller, or different colors, why not include it in the standard - so long as it doesn't have a deletorious effect on the breed?

And I'm with you - I love the breed.  I lam passionate about GSDs.  But to me the BIG picture is much bigger than the status quo of the current fashion.

When's the last time the GSD written standard changed, and what were the changes?

From the FCI Breed Standard:

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY
: According to official resolution, the Association for German Shepherd Dogs (Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde) with seat in Augsburg, as a member of the German Kennel Club (Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen e.V., VDH) and as founding association of the breed, is responsible for the standard of the German Shepherd Dog. This standard was originally drawn up at the first membership meeting of the Association in Frankfurt/Main, on the 20th September 1899, based on proposals made by A. Meyer and von Stephanitz. Amendments were made to the standard during the 6th membership meeting on the 28th July 1901, during the 23rd membership meeting in Cologne/Rhine on the 17th September 1909, at the Board of Directors and Advisory Committee meeting in Wiesbaden, Germany, on the 5th September 1930, and at the Board of Directors and Breed Committee meeting on the 25th March 1961. The standard was revised and adopted by the World Union of German Shepherd Dogs (Weltunion für Deutsche Schäferhunde, WUSV) on the 30th August 1976 and reviewed and catalogued following a resolution of the Board of Directors and Advisory Committee on the 23rd and 24th March 1991.

This does not explain how we got from this:

To this, in 30 years.

As luvdemdogs says, it's a matter of 'fashion', and fashion is not always what's best for the dog.

The change is generally attributed to two German brothers who owned the predominant what-came-to-be-known-as show kennels: Arminius and Wienerau.

Missbeeb, The working lines don't look much different than the first dog, either. Not as heavy perhaps.
