My 5 month old GSD constantly barks when we put him in his kennel run (10'X 20') outside for no reason. It is starting to irritates my family and our neighbours. We tell him to be quiet and stop barking but he never seems to listen. My question is, how do I make him stop barking unnessarily without hurting him?

try using the anti bark electronic collars. Techtronics regards Vikram

Hi again, Forgot to mention that he into Schutzhund training. I have to be very careful that it will hurt his learning ability. Is there any other methods beside using electronic collars?

Tritronics is the collar we use for barking.. he is not barking for no reason in his mind.... part of it may be alarm barking, part could be caused by other stimulus such as birds, squirrels, blowing leaves... who knows?? Part of it could be cuz he's bored to death and needs to do something ... is there no way he can be indoors with you?? or spend more time with him playing and interacting so he is tired and has less energy to burn... Running out to correct him when he barks is rewarding, it gets your attention.... The bark collar takes you out of the picture, they soon figure it out and it should have no bearing on his sport training when you are turning him on.. Indiscriminate nuisance barking will stir up a lot of trouble and could get you fined ...... I'm not sure I'd put an e-collar on a 5 month old, but all my youngsters stay indoors with me til I am done with house/crate training and then spend short sessions outside... Good luck

I have a female shephard that has similar problem. I tried a bark collar but all that did was severely depress the dogs natural drives. I mean the dog wouldn't want to play tug or do anything. Once I removed the collar, went back to her regular crazy self. My personal opinion is that your dog is probably very nervy and thus will always be somewhat annoying as far as the barking off the training field. That is the price of sometimes of Nervy dogs ( Lot of drive????)

I issue the command "enough" in stern voice...if they don't stop they get quality crate time...never takes me over 2 weeks....A kennel run is a differnt situation. You will have to experiment with negative/positive punishment reward combos...A GSD does not do well spending hours in a kennel run. Would never consider one in the city. THere are ordinances where I live...15 minutes of continued barking and you get a sitation.

My experience has been that the best way to teach a dog to NOT bark is to TEACH HIM TO BARK ON COMMAND -- (and also STOP ON COMMAND -- "enough!") and then NEVER QUE HIM TO BARK. You can't just throw a puppy in the kennel - he wants attention -- he has a brain -- he doesn't want to be left alone for 3-4 or more hours -- We start the outside in the kennel runs very slowly - short periods - 15 minutes -- work up to 30 - then an hour - FEED THE PUPPY IN THE KENNEL -- I have the food out there before the puppy goes out - Look !! FOOD - and it's here for you - how neat !!! she says I get to eat while I'm out here -- GREAT !!! love to eat !!! and there's toys and bones etc there or an adult in the next run to "run up and down with" - something to do -- and they learn qucikly that it's not FOREVER - You will come back for them -- I don't go for this barking at falling leaves - or birds -- that's not good and needs to be addressed by other means -- But give a word or a signal to SPEAK - and ANOTHER TO TURN IT OFF !!! and this should help.

I had the similar problem with my dogs, I have two 5 1/2 months old females, and one female will bark even if she hears an hissing sound in the bushes at nights, they live outside in the woods ( Kennel ) away from my house but close to the neighbors. My neighbors brought to my attention that they can't sleep due to barking. I noticed for couple days and figured out the troublemaker female and I bought the electronic collar with highest intensity ( 18 Levels ) and I only made them wear for about 8 hours at the max in the night on only one female and once I remove it in daytime they are normal, since then they calmed down littlebit and solved the problem, I would rather use the collar than paying fines or getting rid of the dog.

Muzzle will keep the dog from biting,it can still bark.........Not to mention, how would you like to have one strapped to your face for 6,8 10hrs or more at a time?
