Hello all, I just had a puppy that went home with no problems a few days ago..she had a loose stool, which didn't cause concern because they changed food. She was eating and drinking like normal. She had a little bit of liquid throwup. A couple of times not excessive. she has been sleeping alot and not really acting like a happy puppy. Again I just chalked it up to stress, This morning she had the water diarea. She did get her puppy shot the day she left here. She just died this morning... The vet looked at her but didn't get to do much because she died. Has anyone had a puppy have a reaction to the puppy shot, does this sound like what happend?? I am now worried about giving the rest of the litter thier shots...The other pups that have gone home are doing fine, and then ones that are still here are doing fine. any information would be good. Of course he is saying could be a hart defect, or a virus...well the virus can be omitted because the others would have it if it were that. And befor anyone asks yes I am giving them a full refund. ok the vet ran the test for coccidea and she had it...quite a bit of it. So because she wasnt treated she died. Lesson learned don't give advice over the phone,,,if she had taken the pup to the vet and she had been treeting she would hve been fine. That is if the vet would hve checked for it. Heather

doesn't your vet check when they do the health certificate before they're allowed to leave? Here in Florida, all pups have fecals done to test for cocci, guardia, worms, etc. They aren't allowed to go to new homes unless clear.

yes he does...these people live about 2 hours from here and drove to pick up the pup she did have a vet check at 7 weeks, and didn't have any loose stools here....she has been gone for 4 days and is a small pup, so having stress diarea for 4 days would have created this problem. When he called me after 2 days of upset tummy...I left him a detailed message about haveing diarea and cocci, and that I would meet him halfway and give him some albon...that if she wasn't treated she would continue to get sick.. well he didn't check his message and had his wife call me the next day. I again told her that I left him a detailed message and told her all I told him. But they didn't respond, thinking it wasn't such a big deal, and it wasn't until this morning that she was so bad she couldn't move and they took her to the vet. Heather

My pups have to been seen by their vet as well within a few days of receipt. I wouldn't be guaranteeing the replacement puppy. They were too negligent for me to do that. Runs in a puppy can be very dangerous as they've found out.

That puppy probably had an intusseception (sp?) where the bowel, telescopes into itself as a result of the diarrhea. It's common in little puppies with diarrhea. Unfortunately, horrible things like this happen to puppies. I shipped a puppy to CA, had a negative fecal just prior to the flight. In a day or 2 after his arrival there he began to vomit and have diarrhea. The vet discovered the problem, an intusseception and coccidia. He had surgery, but did not recover. Diarrhea is very, very dangerous in a young puppy and should always be considered an emergency situation. Coccidia is usually not serious in adult dogs and some may even be carriers. But, it's often fatal in puppies. The coccidia doesn't kill them, the intusseceptions do that.

Well that was my thought too...and I am going to let them know that they were the reason for this puppy dieing. But because it was less then a week I am refunding the money. I have learned a great lesson here. I have ordered albon in pill form to go home with the puppies so that when they get diarea from the stress and then get sick from that. I am also going to stress, instead of highly recommending that they take thier pup to the vet within 24 hours from leaving here. I never did this because my vet does his vet check. Heather

This does not sound like a reaction to a vaccine. Vaccine reactions are almost instanteous with usualy acute onset vomiting and diarrhea or hives and swelling, and lethergy. This is usually evident wihtint minutes to a couple of hours post vaccination. It also rarely happpens on the first vaccine but usually the second. Could be viral, while the pup has been diagnosed woth coccidia I would not rule out virus as this pup is stressed by new environment. Too bad the vet didn't do a giardia adn parvo tests as well as the cocidia test. Could also be an intestinal blockage or an intestinal intucessaton (sic) where part of the intestine telescopes back on itself. I require a vet check within 48 hours of purchase. I try to let my pups leave on a Friday night with an appointment with the new owner's vet on Saturday morning or at the latest on Monday. Summer pups are much more prone to this type of stuff. susan

I have used the Parvaid and do keep in in stock... I will check into the other stuff. The vet did do a Parvo test which came back neg. so not that. and this was the pups 2nd shot...I give a 6 week shot too. Parvo is very bad in this area. But I am going to add this into the contract that the pup must go to the vet within 48 hours for a refund/replacement. right now I have to step up to the plate, suck it up and do the right thing and give back the money.
