Make sure to call all vets in yours and surrounding towns. Take pictures or fax a lost dog sheet to them that has pictures on it. If someone comes in with a "new dog" it could possibly be Keizer. You want these vets to know there is a Shepherd missing and to really question anyone bringing in a new adult Shepherd they say they just purchased, adopted, found, or a child just brought home, etc. Even if he is not chipped, the vets can compare him to pictures and even see if he responds to Keizer or any of his commands. Ask them to call you immediately if they suspect someone has brought in your dog. Also ask them to hang your lost dog posters in their lobby. Clients often sit in the waiting room long enough to check things out. They may also be of assistance if they see your poster and then notice a neighbor with a "new dog".

Good luck.

Check every backyard you can.  Go right up and peep over the fences.  Most people won't even know you're there.  If they see you and ask you what you are doing, tell them.  Tell them he jumped your fence, it's possible he jumped theirs and they not know.  If you run into resistance, call your local utilities and ask to speak to whomever works the area and ask him/her to be on the lookout.  Our electric company uses binoculars to look over fences to read meters and they know who has a dog and who doesn't .  My cousin's dobie ran off and he looked for days and found him tied in the backyard of a man that said he could have him back if he paid the vet bill stating he had paid several hundred for treatment of this or that.  My cousin called the sheriff and was told if you know it's your dog, go get him.  So my cousin went in, untied the dog and went home.  The guy still wanted his money but since it was his decision to have the dog treated (if he did, no bill was ever produced) it wasn't his dog, he didn't have the right etc. so my cousin was not responsible for reimbursing him.  My brother's lab disappeared while he was overseas for a month.  When he came back he tried really hard to find the dog, put up posters, ad in paper etc.  We had all decided after 2 weeks that Rebel wasn't coming home but my brother kept looking.  He was afraid the dog was hurt and needed him.  Lo and behold he gets a call from someone just 1.5 miles away saying "I think we have your dog".  Apparently Rebel showed up on their back step and barked until they let him in.  They fed him and took care of him knowing he belonged to someone since he barks to go in or out.  He was very old at this time and we think he just got too tired to come home and decided to make himself at home there.  He sure was glad to see my brother and his truck.  The people were very nice and hated to see him to since he is such a good dog.  My brother has the hidden fence so normally his dogs don't wander.  Those who took him in live right on the highway with no fence.  He could have gone home anytime he wanted to but chose to stay put until recovered.  Must have been some good food.  Keep trying to find Keizer, you are in everyone's thoughts and prayers.

Sorry, Moons, I do know what I'm talking about.  Go ahead and continue to punish when they come back.  Unlike eichenluft's story, where the hound "rarely does that twice," by Moon's own admission, it's a recurrent thing.  So by your own admission, your corrections don't work, and since you also admit that your dogs "understand perfectly" and also "don't give a shit" - then why are you punishing at all?  It's for YOU to vent your anger; you admit it's not to teach them anything.

(Also, as a hound person myself, there's a huge difference between staying with a hunting pack that is out and high-tailing it off the back deck at your home).

Well we just did a foot search with baily, my mom and me. she actually did track him to a house out in the country, the man said he seen both of my dogs yesterday morning, he said the bigger one, (meaning Keizer) is hurt, he is bleeding and limping pretty bad. we searched all the feilds and all the surrounding"s including the over flowing creek that now looks like a river. We stayed out there for 3 hours and nothing, baily couldnt find any thing else either. I dont know if he is dead, or someone seen he was hurt and picked him up and he could be anywhere. I dont think he is in town where, everyone is looking. I Knew he was hurt. as soon as i seen baily come home alone, i knew something was wrong.  How come she was able to track him all the way to that farm, which has show sheep and cows, and then she just stops, and acts like she cant find him any where else. I cant beileive, she was able to do as much as she did. I have another gsd,  that i think has a better tracking ability, she can track marijauna. But she is not as close to keizer as baily is so i dont know if it will work or not. we had to stop and eat and get the ticks off of us, we got a bunch from the wooded areas we were searching, they are spotted to, but so far we havent been bit. Were going to go buy some deet before the next search.

I hate to hear the bad news.  Is it possible the farmer shot him?  Around here farmers will shoot a dog that comes around their livestock.  That might explain why Baily couldn't track him any further and why she was so traumatized when she came home.  Before wasting time in ticksville you might want to ask him if this is what happend.  Try to be calm about it and realize Keizer and Baily may have been chasing the animals.  If he feels you won't go nuts when he answers you, he may tell the truth.  It may not be what you want to hear and I hope I am wrong but it's possible your search has ended with the farmer.  Tell him how very important it is that you know the truth.  If he insists he did not shoot at the dogs find out what direction they were going when he saw them.  If he did shoot at them and only wounded Keizer, I would backtrack and look in every nook and cranny between the farm and home.  If Keizer is hurt, most likely he tried to get home and may be somewhere in between.  Good luck.

Take that other shepherd with the "better nose" and go to the farmer's house; start from there. Find something that smells like Keizer and go with it. It does not matter that this other dog is not as "close" to Keizer-it is about the game of tracking, not so much about the friendship between the dogs. Good luck. I will be praying that you find him today.
