I have heard you should yearly vaccinate against Bordetella, and yesterday while at the vet he recommended every 3-4 months, has anyone else heard this. He said he just got a new study that every 3-4 months was going to be required by all state and licesened boarding facilities and veterinarians will recommend this as well, I wouldlike to know what others vets are saying. It is rare I have to board my dogs, but do so cautiously with a friend. I don't want to over vaccinate my dogs, but do want to keep them safe.

I do mine every 6 months especially since they're out and about with training, etc.

I don't vaccinate against bordetella anymore since it's not life-threatening and is self-curing and self-limiting. My first GSD had the intra-nasal vac. 2 weeks later he developed a chronic bacterial sinusitis that continued til he died from lymphosarcoma 3 years later. He sneezed thick mucous and blood and we had to carry several towels with us everywhere he went, but we loved him so went the extra mile and cleaned up the mess. Two surgeries and many months of expensive antibiotic surgery did not cure the problem. I'd rather have a dog with kennel cough than a dead dog from too many vaccines. Several times a year to vaccinate against a disease that is not life-threatening might not be a really great idea. Be careful.............it might be too much of a good thing.

I have always vaccinated mine every 6 months ..... have a friend who is a very conservative vet when it comes to vaccines (we all do the big ones every 3 years or so..)but she recommends 6months for kennel cough and the new lepto since we are in an area with lots of rodent population.... I have seen some pretty sick dogs with kennel cough, required lots of treatment(high fever, thick discharge, no appetite) and it can develop into pneumonia which becomes serious.....

Hello, I have a boarding kennel and training facility and EVERY single dog living here, or being boarded here MUST have a bordetella vaccination within the last 6 months. None the less, that does not prevent all disease. I hear frequently about outbreaks in other kennels with serious complications. Just recently, I had a show and trial here .Everyone was required to demonstrate compliance with health requirements. It was 90 plus degrees outside and I allowed all dogs into the kennel to prevent a dog from becoming heat stressed or worse. Even though vaccinations were required, some dog carried some sort of upper respiratory infection which was passed to one dog of mine and one person who participated in the show had a dog become ill. It is possible the dogs got this from biting the sleeve as no other dogs, even dogs in close proximity, became ill. So, even with vaccination, get a lot of dogs in close proximity and one will generally have some sort of problem, even in a state of the art facility with outstanding ventilation. It is irresponsible NOT to vaccinate dogs unless you are certain they will never be in contact with other dogs. DKiah is correct and I am sure others will tell you that bordetella can be very nasty. In my case, the two dogs who became ill had mild cases of whatever it was. None the less, they were ill, and it cost us money and I worried about other dogs becoming ill. It is simply a falsehood to mistake dogs being dead "from too many vaccines" with dogs dying of preventable disease. To think this way shows a lack of understanding of real risk. Though there are about 200 strains of bordetella and vaccination may not prevent all illness associated with exposure, it is likely to help and limit the scope and severity of the disease. No bordetella vaccination? In this area and in every kennel I know of, I can guarantee no kennel or vet clinic will board your dog. Is it a matter of money? You bet! An unprotected dog carrying illness can cost me my business. Developing bordetella is a real risk if exposure happens. No one has ever proved a dog died of "too many vaccines", although some dogs have compromised immune systems and there are also those very rare adverse events associated with vaccination.

Mine get the nasal injection every six months.

Ouch!! Actually I am not an irresponsible dog owner, I just chose to not bombarb another of my dogs with vaccines I don't think they need. IMO too many vacs are not a good thing. The kennel I use is owned by a friend who understands how I feel about bordetella vacs and she also knows I would not make any trouble for her should Blitz get kennel cough while he was boarded there. If asked, I'd gladly sign a waiver. I guess I need to agree to disagree on this one LOL.

My dogs got an injectable vaccine, not a nasal inhalation one, is that maybe the difference?? I only have done it once yearly but have never had a dog with it, I will just do very 6 months unless my friend whom boards my dogs changes her policy. Thanks everyone for advive and comments.

What does IMO mean? I see that a lot.
