I was quoted a price for 700 euro is this outrageously high???? If it is 700 Euro to ship than ok, but when this was discussed previously on the messageboard I thought it was lower.(DH Lennox is worth it, LOL) Also asked another breeder(who has a male listed on here for sale) but if I wanted sperm test it would be 150 Euro, that sounds high too??? My vet(in US) charges $35. Thanks for info.

Rates right now are extremely high not to menion the weather restrictions in place. It is very expensive TO Frankfurt as well.

are we talking adult or puppy here -- I got a puppy in April and the shipping charges by the breeder was 400E --and it was stated seperately from the price of the puppy = actually on the airbill it was less than that - but they use GK - I'm sure everybody does - and I'm sure there are other expenses (crate, collar, etc) and their entitled to make a little something for their trouble - especially on an already inexpensive puppy - 700 seems high to me even for an adult - but gas prices are crazy as you know. Why don't you check with GK to get more information ?

Shipping prices to the US for mature adult males range from just over 500 Euros to about 600 Euros depeding on the US destination. Then you still need to get the dog to the Frankfurt airport. The shipping companies charge 75 to 85 Eurocents per kilometer calculated on the one way trip. So if the dog is not close to FRA and needs to be transported there, ground transport can quickly add up. About 3 1/2 to 4 hours one way travel as it applies to this dog will come to approx 300 Euros on top of the kennel and flight cost. Depending on pick up schedule an extra day of kennelling at the airport can also occurr, with an extra charge of course. Females are usually somewhat less because they travel in a smaller crate. If there is no ground transport involved then $600US for an adult female is quite possible. Unlikely for an adult male though travelling in a 600 series crate. Kari, feel free to contact the shipping companies yourself. I will send you their contact eMails. The contacts I will send speak English. There are not a lot of vets in Germany that will do a sperm test. Usually getting this done involves finding the right clinic, travelling there, etc. The charge sounds about right for just the test. But - sperm tests are not reliable, IMO a waste of money. The dog can turn up infertile the very next day. AI is not very common in Germany, and not allowed with GSD anyways. Hence the few vets who are familiar with handling a male's precious parts in such manner.

If you are using a shipping company you are going to pay much more than if you can have somebody bring the dog to the airport for you.I have imported a number of dogs and usually get charged a premium for the crate they are being shipped in and this may be a good part around $150 euros (crate cost) of your total shipping cost. call luftansa cargo and ask what they charge for shipping. give them crate size and estimated weight

The one and only time I shipped a dog(fom Stuttgart to Dallas, cost me over $1000(over 10 Years ago)). It is cheaper for me to go and get the dog, cause it only cost the price of excess baggage, if the dog accompanies you. If the dogs fly alone, as cargo it is substantially higher. You have to realize also that the Euro fluctuates from day to day. Every day a new rate is published about 2:00PM their time. Over a period of months, the price can really iincrease, expecially with the dollor as low as it is against the Euro now. Keep in mind, there are a lot of cost involved as all the people involve recieve their charges. The further away from a shipping point(Up north or deep south-Frankfurt is centrally located), the more it is going to cost.

Interesting suggestion Michael10. What are the expected saving when shipping directly with Lufthansa? Lets say an adult female in a 500 crate.

by SGBH on 09 July 2005 - 04:07

DH, I had someone bring a dog to the airport and it flew with Lufthansa to Dallas. I drove to Dallas from Arkansas and picked up the dog. Back then the Deutch Mark was still the currency and crate and airfare came to a little over $1000. That was over 10 years ago.
