Me myself, I could never breed a litter regardless of the quality of dog/bitch combo...I wouldn't be able to let any of them go! I have puppyitis. You'll find a good home for your other little girl. I know you'll take good care of her until then.

I don't agree 100%, Jenni. The majority of GSDs are pet quality sought by pet owners. GSDs are in the top 3 akc registered dogs every year. That number isn't there because every one of those dogs are in a high quality home. I'm not saying that I totally disagree with you, but I believe your statement to be incorrect. I agree that Quality /big name breeders have people that are in dire need of a puppy, but not all of them and not all the time.

Just man up and keep the thing until you find a good home. Track it, imprint and socialize the hell out of it.
You bred it and should take responsibility. If you don't, then you shouldn't have bred. If you do, well no harm.

I get very attached to all my animals, I have a Cockatiel that is as old as dirt and could not bear to give him to anyone else.
No one knows him like I do. My chickens had names.
We save turtles from the highway to keep them from being run over.
I love them all. Big, small, wild and tame.
I even love snakes, but the ones that are poisonous are just gonna have to give me my space, or end up in the freezer.
We've strayed from the original questions.

Funny this should come up now! LOL Vet said xrays showed 6, maybe 8 pups. I had 6 sold, so I thought that was great. SHE HAD 11 of them little suckers! LOL One person of the 6 backed out, therefore, only sold 5 at 8wks. All others stayed with me, went through training and eventually sold about a year or so old....except 2. AT 2.5 yrs old now, I JUST sold the female to a wonderful home, and still have the male that I'm STILL trying to get rid of. However, if it comes down to it, his place will always be with me! :)

I think the best case short-term solution to this problem would be to find a good foster home. Pay for the food, the vet bills and allow someone else to raise the puppy.

The problem with the breeder keeping both the pup they held back and the unsold puppy is that now you have a serious time issue. The breeder will likely then have at least 3 dogs, the mother and the two pups. I can't imagine how someone would have enough time to raise and train two puppies of the same age, keeping them separate so they don't bond to each other over people, as well as spend the time with the adult dogs. Ultimately, unless the breeder doesn't work outside the home, the dogs will simply not get the experiences they should, simply because of a lack of hours in the day.

Check with local obedience and agility clubs if the puppy shows promise for that kind of competition.

In my area, quite a few people have puppies and no buyers for them. All of these pups are from untested, untitled stock. Perhaps that plays a role as once people start breeding like that, they limit their market largely to pet owners only.

The foster home might be a good idea if the foster home could raise a German Shepherd properly.
Training and socializing.
The idea has more promise than a shelter.
Your right about a flooded pet market.
There are certain realities to consider tho.

I've never had that problem. I have had pups come back and need to be rehomed cause the owners babied them so much
that they ruled the household!

I don't advertise pups here, just in a local newspaper that you can read on line, I do not ship my pups, so I thought that would become a problem, but never has, I just run my web-site in the classified for only $29.00 a monthThat news paper reaches many surrounding towns.

I have had alot of word of mouth from people that love the pups they got from me, also, I will take pups back if there's a problem, Never Ever give a puppy or dog away for free, if someone has to pay any amount for their puppy or dog I believe they will take way better care than if it was free...............

You need to have your vet pass your phone # around for people looking for a GSD pup, also, people that already got a pup from you, let them know you still have a pup left, offer that pup to them at a discount, also, you need to advertise somewhere, some newspaper or dog club newsletter,

Good Luck, and hold onto him until you find the right home for him, someone will want him.........

Thanks Michael for understanding, you are right, most of the people don't get it here. Read the Valiandale post again...

Moons, If I bred a dog and had a left over puppy, I would keep it, raise it as if it were my own, training socializing, etc. until I found the right home for the pup...someone would come along just at the right time for the pup and buy him/her. While constantly advertising said pup...and networking to let others know you had a terrific pup available...that is IF I was a breeder....

BREEDERS READ THE FRIGGIN VALIANTDALE POST AGAIN!!!! I AM GETTIN IN A TON OF REGISTERED DOGS, THAT AT ONE TIME OR OTHER CAME FROM ONE OF YOUR DOGS OUT THERE...MAYBE DOWN A FEW GENERATIONS...BUT ALL THE SAME FROM A BREEDER SOMEWHERE....JUST HOW MANY DOG ADVERTISEMENTS ARE THERE JUST ON THIS DATABASE ALONE IN THE US??? THERE ARE OVER 7,000 GERMAN SHEPHERDS ALONE LISTED FOR ADOPTION ON PETFINDER.COM

STOP BREEDING FOR A YEAR AND LET US RESCUES AND SHELTERS CATCH UP...MAKE YOUR DOGS MORE VALUABLE BY DOING THAT...AND STOP FLOODING THE MARKET!!!

I would have to say that I agree with SHOSTRING in this matter. I could not in good conscience PTS a pup just because of it's color. From my Dads mouth, the Navy did that with white Boxer pups just because of color...threw them overboard!
I'm not a breeder but if I ever do I will keep any pups that are not taken and adjust accordingling to accomodate until I find a home for them.
