What is a fair price for a good German Shepherd Pup? If the pup is from top VA stud and high V or Va female, then what? I mean a 8wk old pup. How much are you will to pay and why? Explain to me the wide price range that is found in the USA. I see prices from 800-6500 for a 8 week old. Give me some feedback here, open my eyes to this.

This subject comes up every 90 days. Here's a link to previously discuss messages concerning this topic. Open your eyes to the "search" function :-) http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins.search?s=puppy+prices&b=AND&r=25

As any (good) economist can tell you there is no such a thing as "fair" price. Prices are dictated by demand and supply. When the price range, for the same quality, is wide it means that the information is not transparent and the market is segmented. Prices of up to $6000 for a puppy are lures to catch the naive. You should not pay more than $2,500 for a first rate puppy (Last year I paid E1,500 for a puppy whose mother is a German VA and the sire a German V1). The market is international so the price should be the same in the US or in Germany but in Germany you should allow for higher trasaction costs.

800 is an extreme bargain for a top V or VA parented puppy... however I strongly discourage ANYBODY from buying an 8 week old puppy that costs 6500.. Even know the parents are good... that doesn't mean you will have a clone of either parent... If you have 6500 to piss away get a young adult or adult dog that already has some training under their belts. NEVER buy a puppy that much. It's ridiculous and you diffidently know the breeders motives into "improving" the breed if you know what im trying to say here. Puppies are crapshoot you will never know what you are going to get... even if the parents are VA or high v rated.

If you keep your eyes close while buying a pup then for sure you will pay 6000 plus for a pup,the price for a pup should not be more then 800 to 1000 euro. For sure the breeder will not sell the pick it will fetch him 10 times more price when he growes up to his expectation.

fair is what you will pay for it. you have to decide how much you want to spend then find the best puppy for that price. I would say do you home work on what combinations are working in germany and try to follow that.maybe you will get lucky.I wish you the best. Also are you buying a pet or show dog? That will affect the price.

I agree with LuvCzechDawgz. Please do go and check earlier messages. I have regularly been in contact with some of the finest breeders in Germany and will get males from them for 800 EUR, females somewhat less. Taking into account that it's always a crapshoot, paying thousands of dollars for an 8-weeks old pup is ... don't mind if I say so ... "stupidity" (and plain "business" from brokers). You get NO guarantees from them whatsoever that you're dog is going to be SG, let alone reach V. If an outstanding (promessing) pup has already been spotted in a litter, NO WAY you're gonna get it. It will stay with the breeder or his best friend. Anybody willing to waist thousands of dollars, let me know. I will travel to the US myself carrying your 8-weeks old pup. Make sure you have me stay in a fine hotel with gourmet food. I'm very picky.

Nicely said Jantie. VomInsel, I once bought a puppy to supposedly co own for $3000 (stupidity indeed). I figure you get what you pay for! I was wrong! All I can tell you is this dog, is now in a friends backyard. Not any close to a show dog type, small, no pigment, and very unsocial despite being exposed to different scenarios as a pup! On the other hand it will be unfair, to have unrealistic expectations from a "show" pup and its breeder. A lot of decent german/European breeders will tell you that upfront. JMHO, Roger.

If I were interested in breeding, I'd buy a young adult rather than taking my changes on a puppy.
