Hello all, I have a female puppy who is 4mnths old and when she walks she sways in the rear. I am very peronoid about HD because I seem to have bad luck with dogs in that area. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if that is normal in puppies or should I get her checked? She doesn't seem to have problems getting around and they don't seem to be bothering her. Her sire is Mambo Thuringer Weg who was 'a' normal and OFA good and her dam is Kora Spaidz vom Germelhaus who is OFA fair. Her pedigree can be viewed on the site. Thanks

If shes in no pain of what so ever you dont need to worry about it quite yet. However if you start to hear loud clickings and the puppy starts to cry ( in pain) then yes make an emergency Hip/elbow xrays the next day with the vet. DO NOT FEED HER the night before the xrays.

Many pups have a wobbly gait at that age. Long hind legs usually make for a wobbly gait, and generally loose joints and musculature. If you want to be absolutely sure you can have the pup prescreened at this age, without having to sedate it for the procedure. IMO it is a bit premature though to warrant the expense, I would wait until the pup is 6-8 months to have it prescreened. Take it off puppy food, put it on a premium quality adult food with 22-26% protein, and a high fat content. I recommend Eagle Pack Original Adult Formula (25/15), you can use it with growing pups and any active adult.

What is the significance of taking her off of puppy food and putting her on adult food? I am feeding her Maximum Nutrition. Thanks everyone for your response.

Most puppy foods are too rich. A good adult formula lets the pup grow slower, which is better for the bones and joints. And with the Eagle I have noticed generally tighter joints and firmer muscles.

Hey I have two litter mates of your pups.... I have them on adult food now, and they are doing well. I wouldn't worry about the wobblyness of the pup, but you can watch her in a full out run and see if she bunny hopps (both hind legs together)... another thing to look at is if she sleeps with her hind legs out like a frog, this is one sign of it too. Gimme.... While most of these theories on how the pups walks, sits, runs, etc may be somewhat helpful, some may be simple "growing pains". Also know that some pups and dogs have none of these "symptoms". You can get OFA prelims done @ 4 mos of age. The probabibility of what you see now and what you will see as an adult with the screenings is very high (+80%). If she's a dog you're going to work (or show) I would consider getting this done soon instead of spending a lot of time and money in training, etc. Proactiveness is a good thing ;-) Good luck!

Thanks everyone for all the information. Heather I used to own the dam of these pups! Do you have any pics of the pups posted on here? Also this is to everyone I would like to get my 'a' stamped as well as OFA certified so she can obtain a ZW number how do I go about doing that? Will she receive a ZW number even though she is not from germany and her dam is an American bred german bitch? If she does receive a ZW how will they go about giving her one? I know its supposed to be the average of her parents and then they add some points on if the hips are graded fast normal or noch. Thanks Damien

I have a 4 month old female pup and she gets around like you describe(as all my puppies have) and I am not the least bit worried. Enjoy her at this age and take lots of pictures. Stephen
