LOL Prager.  I don't believe you are fat.  My mental image of you is not fat at all.  Somehow I just know it.

Working for a Vet for 25 years I saw a LOT of overweight dogs come thru the office, and the attitude that their owners were LOVING owners because their dogs were fat, and that I must be cruel and not love my guy because I kept him on the thin side... ALWAYS pissed me off...   @ 10 years Wizard had no trouble entering the back of my truck over the tailgait, while their dogs had to be boosted into the back seat of the limo.  (Before anyone panics that I rode my dog around in the bed of a truck, it had a cap on it, and he had a nice cozy 3X3 wooden box full of hay to curl up in if I had to leave him there for a little while.

One of the worse was the 65 lb BEAGLE, who couldn't walk, and wheezed when she walked.  I finally convinced her owner to put her on a reducing diet... They only got her down to 43 lbs, but she was much happier than she was @ 65! Another was a nasty lil Schiperke who weighted 28 lbs!!  Her temperment actually improved when she got down to 15... her owner had been rather upset with my honesty (bluntness) that she was going to loose her if she didn't get some weight off the dog... even went to the Boss's wife to complain... and appologised once she saw the difference that the weight loss actually made in every aspect of the dog's life.  Too many vets and other Canine professionals worry too much about  hurting someone's feelings by warning them that they are killing their dogs with the extra weight.

Of course as I write this I could stand someone monitoring my intake as well... excuse me while I go munch some cheap kibble!

I have finally got my new boy down and not so heavy from the previous owners that would free feed him crap food.I think they fed him about 12c a day. Now he gets 3-4c of much better food and eats all at once so I can know what his intake is.The other one I would like to gain weight.

YOU NEED TO SEE THE RIBS   !

THANK YOU   PRAGER.:

I AM COPYING THIS THREAD AND SEND TO ALL  ANIMAL CONTROL/HEALTH UNIT DEPARTMENT PEOPLE

THEY have no clue how a german shepherd is suppose to look...I have had  Kookey people see my dogs and say , You need reported to the AC, your dogs are too skinny and look like they need to eat...

I , of course, don't let very many people near my dogs , unless they are sport people or Gsd people of like FAITH>>lol
And I do not feed any of my dogs, pups on a schedule either....One day a week they do not get a meal at night.

That does not include a puppy under 12 mos.old.

Quote: Mirasmom:

How are you supposed to take a Very Very attentive mom away from her pups for a few hours, so she can "hunt"

If I did that to my mother dogs, they would stress out so bad their milk would dry up, I understand what you mean about feeding your growing pups, and not to over feed them, in fact I feed both a raw diet & a kibble, and I only feed adult dog food from day one to all my pups, it promotes slow growth and stronger bones.

Mirasmom:  What kind of dogs are you speaking of...German shepherds even work during nursing pups..what makes you think you female would stress out????? In fact, the movement and exercise will help all the clean out  move on out.

My main bitch was working and looking for any bite toy or kong or any of her training toys three days after whelp..she was up and ready for her tromp thru the woods to see what animal of the wild had invaded the premises during her 3 day lock up.

She made a hasty trip back to the nursery but she was ready to hunt and have a few times of retrieve and throw outs and each day  I increased her activities...

She was my  Best of the Best our of Cadett v BuseckerSchloss...one fine bitch.  RIP

Three days, YR? What took her so long? LOL

I can't imagine breeding a dog who would get so easily stressed out- having puppies is a natural occurence. I didn't see what Mirasmom said exactly- don't know  why I couldn't find it.

My crazy girl got FURIOUS at Caleb when she saw him ouside with a stick. I thought she just had to pee- dummy me. I let her out when she scratched at the door, and she charged him, jumped on his back, and  grabbed the stick and tried to take it away (operative word "try"- he's 100lbs); I had to  ask him to drop it and just let her have it. I was terrified she was going to hemorrage or something. This was about3.5- 4 hours after her last pup was born. Good Lord, she had me a nervous wreck that first week.

Snow is all gone so we played ball today..Had a visitor interested in buying this male...The above statement was suggested to me on this male pup...in this way  "   Why is this pup so skinny..What are you feeding him.. He looks like he could stand a meal or two????"    Needless to say,  I ignored his comments.

The top pic he is stretching himself for some reason..One of the females was approaching him to get his ball..he struck this pose....he is telling her  I am ready and you cannot have the ball..

Not too skinny,,just right.

This is sire of  the pup, above  who is 9 months old,   Look alikes!  Slender and powerful as a bull dozer.

Both have very high food drive.  The dam and the grand dam are very high food drive and always hungry and always  healthy . I do not have vet bills.
