Dodie, you ask a question above that I feel I must answer...Yes, people can see my ribs when I stretch, just like the dogs above...Though my muscle tone is not nearly as good as the dogs'....

Nothing wrong with dogs being slender and healthy.  I've seen some of the health problems that both humans and dogs suffer from when they carry excess weight, and it's really sad to see...A fifty pound Jack Russell terrier with a skin condition so bad that you don't want to touch her...She looks like a mushroom from the back.  Of course, most of that obesity and skin conditions can likely be traced to the fact that 1) she eats steak and potatoes (fried) at least once a day; 2) she eats a huge amount of dog food, dry kibble, each day; and 3) she is fed candies, confections, and ice cream every day by her 77 year old owner.  At least he laid off on the two Snickers bars every day, but hell, the dog eats more calories in two days than I do in a week.

An obese friend of mine had gastric bypass to lose over two hundred pounds, and has also had to have both knees replaced...They started breaking down, her doc said, from all the weight that she carried for so many years.  So we all know there's no health benefits to being obese.

I have many friends who are obese, and I am about fifteen pounds heavy for my height, but I don't go around telling them that they have to thin down...They are the ones telling me that.  We all know what's good for us..I choose to be sure that my dog stays slender and healthy, and I'm not too concerned about what the rest of society thinks about it.

As for the stuff above about cops...I think it was meant as a joke, but simply, I've known good and bad cops.  Some are just bullies who love the power that badge gives them.  Most are good, kind people that have a job to do, a job that puts them at odds with other people sometimes, but they do it because someone must.  Yes, there are cops that spend entirely too much time drinking coffee and eating donuts...there are a few city officers here that do just that.  But we also have some wonderful county, city, and state police officers that are the nicest people you could meet, as long as you are not breaking the law...Once the poker face they use on the job is dropped, they are just like everyone else, get up, eat, go to work, come home to the family.  Don't paint them all with the same brush...They're not like politicians!

I wish you could see my ribs. No !!!! Rhlhr dog is in absolutely perfect shape. That is a young working dog. Little more weight to the point seeing only last 2 ribs is OK, but much more then that and your dog is FAT!
When I am importing dogs into USA they must feed them extra so that customers in USA do not complain. If you ever had dog in shape like Rhlhr then you can see the difference in agility and endurance.

On Kaso you can see the ribs. Here about 2 years. He was a border patrol dog here he is in my book in perfect shape! The  oder dogs have more muscels but still the stomack must have horizontal line between chest and femur. Take a note of that. On Cordon you can barely see ribs too even so he is older. Longer coat makes it more difficult.. Art z Lipin is somewhat bend thus ribs are not obvious. But see the horizontal line.

With all due respect Jenni78.........its not a joke although I presented it as such.

If I were to elaborate it is a problem with some police k9 teams. The dog is treated as a pet and not as a working dog. The dog is not kept in shape and therefore not as effective on the street. The other half of the team is the weak link. The handler also should be in excellent shape. The police k9 team should be in better shape than other officers. If the handler is fat then how can the dog be as effective as it could be. If the k9 team is in poor physical condition then they are a liability to other officers or at the very least they are not able to be used to their fullest potential. Cops arent the only ones to blame. Dog vendors and trainers are just as at fault. Now dont get me even started on search and rescue dogs and handlers.

Scout...DUH. I know THAT part was serious...but we spun off on a joke. I'd mentioned neutering contributing...and you said "mirror image" which made me laugh..thinking of a neutered person...I have a list of some I'd like neutered.

Jim..I'm not being sensitive...more like exasperated that the tiniest little thing online can be spun into something it wasn't. And actually, you weren't the one I was addressing. You weren't the one rambling on about cops.

Well I know you knew it was serious.....I was merely taking advantage of your post to further my point.

As far as neutering is concerned......the dog I specifically had in mind is NOT neutered and not just fat but OBESE and yes it is a working K9.

Scout,
Are you a K9 handler?  Are you in outstanding physical condition?  Every K9 officer on my PD is in excellent physical condition.  Every one of our dogs is in top condition as well.  Our neighboring cities K9 officers are all in great shape as well.

Scout, please post a picture of you and your dog so we can judge your condition....
