"....Pet or not the hips will also play a factor, a dog with bad hips can be hard to live with if you care for him to see them in pain and unable to get around as they get older..."

If you care for him you would put him to sleep, and if you can't you should not own a dog period. As a responsible owner/handler it's up to you to make the right decission, including the hard ones.

Yes GSD is a working dog and should be able to perform a job, but SCH dog is a sport dog, there is a difference between working dog  and a sport dog.

Respectfully:

Schutzhund was a breed worthiness test that has mutated to a sport game. Not all Schutzhund dogs are all sport dogs.

Thank you Snaiper -- I get soooo tired of Schutzhund Dog (sport) used interchangeably with Working Dog.    HUGE difference.

Wrestleman -- You say Showline does not look like a true German Shepherd ??   I disagree; in fact, I would bet money that most people looking at a Show Line and a Working Line, would think the Working Line is a "Mix."

by Bob McKown on 02 December 2009 - 20:12

Maggie:

That would only be to the uninformed.

Again the Schutzhund dog is a working dog hence the name "Schutzhund" unfortunetly sport dogs are associated with the term Schutzhund and the "sport" is but a  extension of the working dog.

Which is better?  The one that suits you, of course.

My first registered GSD was a mix of working and show lines.  After that I got involved in schtuzhund, saw what a hard working line dog is capable of and never looked back.  I only have and want high drive working line dogs ever since, they suit me to a "T",   I prefer their athletic looks,  I like the way they can run,  accelerate, and turn on a dime.   I like the way they act, I like their energy, their drives, I like an exciting, challenging, fun dog that never, ever quits and thinks there is nothing better in the world than being out on the schutzhund field with me.

Hi Red Sable

There was a post that is repeated on this link

www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/345201.html

and I commented on it, but it seems to have disappeared now, just as well as it had nothing to do with the subject line.

Bob - Of course, it would look that way to the "uninformed."    But, the majority of people are not German Shepherd owners nor do they know that there are American/German Bloodlines and also Show Lines and Working Lines.   For instance, if I did not know there were two distinct German Lines, and I went to look at puppies for purchase (with the Sire/Dam on site), and if the puppies/parents were Working Lines, I would think that someone was trying to pull a "fast one on me."    I think that the "appearance" of the Show Line is "branded" into the minds of the public as to how a GSD should look.

You say that the Sport is an extension of the Working Line ..... I think it is just the opposite.   I would think that performing the "sport" well would be an indication that the dog has (or doesn't have) what it takes to extend into a true Working dog.

Also, I am curious about this .... in the "protection phase" of the Sport, why isn't the dog taught to go after the Arm/Hand that is holding the stick.... why the other arm?   What good would that do in True Protection?

by Bob McKown on 02 December 2009 - 21:12

maggie:

As to the first part I find just the opposite that people that I deal with see show line(non working dogs) and ask me what breed they are. Most people I deal with recognize GSD from Police dogs .

The sport helps show the trainability of the breed, It,s not the end all tell all of Schutzhund.

True protection can be trained into any breed of dog just some breeds are more genetically situated for it. It,s all in the training look at old Schutzhund videos you never see a sleeve there all working in bite suit,s.

A well rounded Schutzhund dog has been exposed to and work in varying situations all my dogs that trial have also done suit work and will bite a arm, leg, shoulder, back what ever you decide to present or attack with.

Sport training is just a specialized venue of the schutzhund dog.
