vonissk, I truly hope that your dog is a match for  Orso!!! My male is also from Kraftwerk kennels, but I just double checked his pedigree and there is not 1 dog that is related to Orso's pedigree :-(   I will send good thoughts and prayers Orso's way to find that perfect match.

OK, I'm sending out a bunch of posts like this. Sorry to clog up the forum briefly, but Orso's life depends on finding the right match.

I am looking for this dog because he/she is closely related to my dog Orso, who needs a kidney transplant.

I will pay $2000 plus all expenses to this dog’s owner if the dog is a good match with Orso and the owner will have the dog donate a kidney to save my dog’s life.

Orso is a 3 year old German Shepherd who is suffering from kidney dysplasia (genetic kidney failure). We are looking for a good hearted person who owns a dog of the same bloodline to become a kidney donor to save our family member. We have been in contact with the leading kidney translplant surgeon in the country and we have been reassured of the saferty of the procedure for the donor dog (both humans and dogs only need one kidney for completely normal life). We are open to all possibilities including buying a dog or financial compensation for the owner of the donor dog. We would also take care of all expenses associated with transportation and full recovery of the donor dog. Our dog came from Kraftwerk K9, his father was V-Ursus aus dem Furstentum Lippe and mother Amie von der Mamutsschlucht. Orso was born on December 2, 2006. Currently Orso is in critical condition and will die without a transplant. Please help us save Orso.

Here is Orso’s picture and pedigree:

OK I am going to bump this back up.  I just talked to Alex and we had a very nice talk.  He is such a nice person and loves his boy so much.  He answered many of my questions and we are working on a plan.  I will put in a call to my vets in the morning and we will make a time for the bloodwork. He says we are working with a two week time frame so we got to get hopping here.  By the way in case anyone is interested the grt grandfather our dogs share is Etzel vom Stadtfeld.  If noone else comes forward I guess they are going to have to be close enough related. I only hope Orso will accept the kidney and this will save his life.  But as I have said before one step at a time. We'll have to see about the bloodwork next.

I just talked to Alex and I will have my dog tested tomorrow.  I really hope a fellow Kraftwerk dog will reply because the chances are better.

Update: Orso has responded very well to dialysis. He is happy and eating again. This is very good news! However, dogs cannot continue for long periods of time on dialysis. It is very hard on them and they have to be euthanized because the quality of their lives becomes so bad.

The search for a closely related donor goes on, and it remains urgent to find a sibling or half-sibling donor as soon as possible.

Yes I talked to Alex this morning and he said he was doing OK--Orso.  He called my vet and gave them all the info they needed and in a few minutes I am on the way to the vet to get the bloodwork done. After we do the bloodwork I doubt I will know anything more for a couple of days.

Hope things work out for the best.  I spoke to the surgeon in California that I believe will being doing Orso kidney transplant.  I spoke to a surgeon  in Illinois who knows Orso story as well from my understanding the likelyhood of everything going well is slim.  Transplant surgery in dogs have a high failure rate so to speak according to the surgeons I spoke to.  Idk but its interesting to see the outcome of this story.  I commend the owner for not giving up on his beloved family member I know most would put their dog down.  This case caught my eye and heart.  Good Luck to him and Orso.  I hope everything goes well and he will pull through this.

I do hope everything goes well for Orso.
What are the chances of him having a normal life after a transplant?

by susanandthek9s on 06 January 2010 - 02:01

The kidney transplant success rate overall in dogs is about 40%, which is a lot better than Orso's chance of surviving without a transplant (which is zero). The chance of success increases if the donor is very closely related to the recipient, the surgeon is extremely skilled (as is Orso's surgeon), the aftercare is outstanding (this should be fine where Orso is), and the owner is intelligent and highly committed to providing the lifelong care the dog will need (clearly true of Orso's owner).

If the right donor is found and Orso makes it through the surgery and aftercare, he will need to be on immune-suppressing drugs for the rest of his life. But he should have a happy and fairly normal life.

It’s interesting to think about what you would do if this were your beloved 3-year-old GSD companion and you could manage to arrange a transplant. If it were my dog, I’d go for it.
